A friend of mine, Nadya who is an avid fan of Afro Cuban music & culture recently approached me to see if I would take on the repair and restoration of the guiro's she brought back from Cuba on one of her many study trips to the island.
Nadya often drops by live gigs & jams with several bands and is allowed to sit in on guiro or clave if there is not already a person allocated that instrument.
She uses a small gourd which is not very loud, when she realised that I grow and have carved and repaired many guiro's and chekere, she informed me she had 2 larger ones at her house which she had since retired to the shelves due to cracks and damage sustained in transit and over the years...
I took on the 2 gourd project, not only repairing the cracks, but giving them a full restoration and overhaul... Below are the pics...

Enjoy!
Ive enjoyed repairing many instruments lately, these guiros presented a challenge.
Welding and bending bells back into shape and painting them was easy, I enjoyed the challenge of these gourds and am very happy witht he finished result, I return them to Nadya tommorrow night at an afrocuban/latin jazz jam night I am playing at.
