Proper way to clean drum hardware and heads???

Hey everyone, so I just purchased some old LP batas from some guy off craigslist. The batas are in good condition, but they were sitting in the garage for years. They are very very dusty (cobwebs and all) and the some of the hardware seems to have very minor rust spots, nothing major.

The guy recommended I take off the heads and wipe them. Just wanted to know what methods you guys use to clean and maintain your batas or other drum's hardware. Thanks!

Also, the skin on the heads seem kinda dry. I've heard of people putting small amounts of hand location on the skins to "give them life & sound" I'm afraid to risk cracking the skins after I clean the hardware and tighten up the bolts

I have a set of CP from 1992, the heads appeared just as the description of your heads, what I did was wiped them off with a damp cloth, which worked great, and then treated them with a cote of extra virgin olive oil. The skins are no doubt rejuvenated, they look and sound great. Hope this helps.
