Alan Lomax was an American ethnomusicologist. He passed away in 2002.
He was quite well known for his field recordings of American folk-blues artists and performers.
Unknown to me was the fact that he also made field recordings in the Caribbean, including Haiti.
Apparently his Haitian field recordings, both audio and video, were buried in the archives for almost 70 years.
PBS had a feature on the work of his daughter Anna Lomax Wood, and her efforts to bring the music out from the archives, and especially to bring it back to Haiti, in an effort to help the Haitian populace recover from the trauma of the earthquake.
Following link contains an interesting video telling the story, and showing short clips of his recordings of Haitian music and percussion.
