6/8 bell pattern in 2/4?

Hi everybody,

here's a CLAVE question: Does anybody know of a standard use or application of the common 6/8-bell pattern drawn into a 2/4 duple feel?

Illustration:

6/8 [|: x.x.xx | .x.x.x :|] ---> 2/4 [|: x..x..xx | ..x.x..x :|]

Is there any style or genre of African /Afro-Caribbean or -American music (could be some special rumba style) that calls for this pattern as a time line (with a duple feel) on a common basis?

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

Hi Thomas ,

I have heard it alot as a repinique part in samba reggae . Mainly played with 2 sticks with one hand accenting the rhythm and the other filling in . Olodum use it for sure .

Hi Thomas,

Also very common in the Puertorican Plena.

See clip around 1:12 playing time.

Thank you Jorge - although I was rather looking for examples where this pattern finds use as a time line, meaning as a repeated cycle of the rhythmic motif with a clave-like, counterpoint function for the music.

I think I've heard it in some Juju music from Nigeria - can't think of a specific example off the top of my head though...

Guilty as charged Thomas!

Do you have that CD Yoruba Drums from Benin, West Africa? There is an example of the duple-pulse form ("2/4") of the standard pattern
played on a small bata drum head on the cut "Ogogo." The pattern is also used in some arrangements of columbia (Viejos cantos afrocubanos) and conga de comparsa (Conga tu carnaval, Hermanos Bravo, 2000: CD).

Thanks, David and everybody.

Yes, I'll check those sources out.

I am currently holding a rhythm class at the conservatory in Hamburg. I should have been called to do that at least 10 years ago. Anyway, I'm glad that it finally happened.

Of course I mentioned and recommended "Clave Matrix", and will occasionally suggest that the institution should purchase it for the library.

Greetings,

Thomas
