Wow. Anyone have any idea what would cause the external hard drive to lose data when the computer blew? Although I have all my mp3s backed up to both thumb drives and a hard drive, I have a ton of photos and video backed up on the hard drive only. Maybe I should leave the ext hard drive disconnected unless I'm actually copying to it...

YES! That would be my recommendation, especially after the disaster of mine.
I´ll never leave the external connected for a longer time except for backups.
So I would strongly advise you to do the same if you want to avoid potential mega-hassle.
