Antique Bass Drum Restoration

Greetings Drummer Boys and Gals,

Just thought some of you might get a kick out of this. I know I did.

Recently, a fella that forms period correct bands of the 1840s and beyond hired me to restore an 1850s Porter Blanchard bass drum.

This venerable drum has 27" drumheads and needed a lot of work, but it was all worth it.

Yeah, the drum was definitely showing it's age. More so than you can tell from that one picture. Among other things, I had to reinforce the shell before mounting the fresh calfskins.

Think of it! This drum may have marched in a parade before the American Civil War. It would have marched again recently except for the virus. The owner already had a gig.
