Guys,

I just got the latest edition of World Percussion & Rhythm which features and interview with John Amira. John cites three New York batáleros at the time who played a major role in his development as a batálero. Carl Vail, Ray McKethan, and Rudy Wright. Anyone familiar with this names?

Saludos,

Jorge,
Can't help you with any of those names. How about Johnny? Did John Amira add or contradict anything that's been said here concerning bata in NYC?

I live in California and was just visiting NYC back then, checking out live music like Libre and Daniel Ponce's Jazz Bata w/ Puntilla. Teddy Holliday, a freind of my Godfather Markus Gordon, invited me to the bembe. Teddy didn't come. I took a taxi to Queens. The folks were very open and freindly, but I knew no one including the drummers. Sorry I couldn't be of any help.

Ah, so you went to a tambor in which the late Teddy Holliday was a part of....yeah woochie and abi are his sons, they may have been there...i'm thinking you may have went to a tambor where in which Totico's crew was playing...Rene Lopez Jr, Willie El Russo, Carlos Sanchez, and countless others may have been there...must have been nice...i always felt that there isn't much info on the late great Teddy Holliday...which there should be...he was one of the first, in NY, particularly being African American to really get into the bata scene...

Hi guys and sorry for not beeing here very often unfortunately... i have no problem to create new category and sub-category forums dedicated to the "history of percussions and music in general"....

Do u want to create a new category?
How do u think we should create the new forums?

For example:

The history of percussions and music (category)
>> Congas (forum 1)
>> Bongo (forum 2)
and so on...

I await your comments to create the new forums...
Bye

Perhaps:

Percussion & Music History (category)

.. Congas (forum 1)
.. Bongo (forum 2)
.. Timbal & Drumset (forum 3)
.. Miscellaneous - Bata, etc.. (forum 4)

Thoughts?

Marcelo.
