Hi brothers,

Great getting all those fantastic patterns from all over the world, and they all come in different shapes and sizes.
Anyone know if there is a recognised standard method for notating conga patterns using just typing, other than using notes and a the stave? On this forum alone, there are many ways of notating used, and I have my own way, but I was just wondering if anyone had any good easy ways we could all share.

I have a method called.S.T.O.M.P. (slap-tone-open/rest-muffle -palm) ..this method works for congas...rather than using notation....

SS TT SS PP start ex.with your lead hand and then alternate
TT SS TT PP
PP SS PP TT
PP TT PP SS..
This is just a small ex. of my method....any other questions??....My Learning DVD is half way done. when it becomes available EVERYONE will know.....I'm thinking of changing the name from "Conga-Robics" to "How'd they get there?"....what say yee guys??....paz..."JC" Johnny Conga....

Hey Diceman,

Yeah ... there are a lot of ways to note these patterns!

Using the way JC has shown and adding the hands underneath
seems to work really well. Looks like many people on this
forum have been using that. For example:

B O P T S T O O : P T S T P T O O
L R L L R L R R L L R L R R L R

B (BASS), O (OPEN TONE), P/T (PALM / TIP), S (SLAP)

As long as you indicate what each letter stands for, some
variation in what you call it won't matter. I use PT for Palm / Tip others may use HT for Heel / Toe.

Tomatoes / tomatos !!

P.S. Try out that pattern at a good pace and tell me what you think.

If this statement is to remain true, then shouldn't it be
h (heel) t (toe) s (slap) t(toe) h (heel) t (toe) o (open) o (open) repeat?

If I am dancing with my hands the way you dance with your feet, this statement would then be true writen this way............riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight? Eeeeeeh! I'm just an ol' dog learning a new trick here! :laugh:

The tumbao is just the sweetest, most perfect conga pattern and is so universal it fits anything in 4/4

Now that was funny!

I had noticed that you were in N. AZ, I was going to ask you how far North? There's only so far up in Northern AZ you can go and still find yourself in some semblence of civilization without falling into the Grand Canyon!

I'm actually in N. Phoenix myself, but I haven't been in Flagstaff for quite sometime now! Are you giggin' much up there? What kind of group are you with? I think that the last time I was up near there was at the Casino, on I-17 (Cliff Castle?) I had a gig there a couple of years ago!

It's cooling off up there, time to head South!

Unfortunately, no consistent gigs right now. ???

Random opportunities that are slowly increasing. Also, there are dance troupes in town that use live drumming
- african, turkish, belly dancing, etc... get to drum and watch pretty girls move those hips!!

I'm hoping to put together a jazz/funk/rock/blues/fusion group over the winter as my recent move affords me a place to practice.

However ... I'm also sure to visit the valley a couple of times this winter and would be very honored to meet with you.
