A million apologies, I will stop using shorthand.

Thanks Diceman

and suavecito! :)

If the splash is as thin and quick as promised, I´ll enjoy it for sure.
The idea of a splash accent every now and then, especially when you don´t play with a cymbal-stacked timbalero is quite nice, isn´t it?

I've also been looking at adding a cymbal or two to my hand-percussion setup. I haven't yet used any of these, but I have found the following as being LISTED for use with the hands, either specifically, or "suitably". I mention them only as POSSIBILITIES that can be explored, but I myself have yet to hear any of them:

--Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante (16" crash, 18" crash)

--Sabian HHX Evolution 17" "Effeks" crash

--Zildjian FX Azuka Latin Hand & Stick (15" crash, 15"crash w/rivets, 18" crash)

--Meinl Candela (10" splash, 14" crash, 16" crash, 18" crash/ride, 14" "jinglebell")

--Istanbul Hand & Stick (12" crash, 15" ride)

I have also spoken to a cymbal dealer, and he thought that just about any ultra-thin or paper-thin would do.

All THAT being said... I have smacked a few regular drumset cymbals (not the above ones) at a local drum shop, and my opinion was:
1)You just about can't get any sound at all out of some drumset cymbals if you hit with your hand
2)Some had quite a bit of sound, but if you hit them with your hand, the sustain can be wayyyyy too long (but probably not bad at all if you use a drumstick tip)

I think the only way to REALLY tell what will or won't work, would be to buy, try, and sell back off what doesn't work great. BUT that can be EXPENSIVE!

So, perhaps others here might be able to give recommendations based on PERSONAL EXPERIENCE in order to help the rest of us narrow down the choices??

I definitely wouldn´t opt for the Meinl Candela 10", although I got one I had to resell it - the sound was awful, just metallic and nothing to it.
At the moment I´m after the Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante 16" (hand) crash - check out the sound at

Aw, that's too bad. That was the only 10" splash I have found that is listed as being for hand use. Perhaps another regular drumset 10" splash, in thin or extra thin might work OK?

Well, I have a thin 10" Zildijian Splash from the K series and tried it out hitting by hand which is OK, even much better than the Meinl Candela 10", which sounded way too dark, a bit like an Asian cymbal and not so splashy. But then, at the end of the day, it´s pretty much a matter of personal taste.
Have you tried out a 13" Splash? I heard there´s a Latin splash, but I don´t know the brand.

By the way, I have just ordered the 16" Sabian AAX El Sabor Picante hand crash ( a showroom model for less$). I´ll let you hear what it´s like.

Ooops, I´ve just seen that the 13" Splash I meant is from Sabian, too: It´s the Sabian AA 13 Inch El Sabor Salsa Splash which is suitable for hand use

And one more thought on "conventional" splashes: The 10" Zildijian splash I have was a bit hard on the hands, but maybe a paperthin model wouldn´t be.

So good luck with choosing an yppropiate cymbal!

I use a zildjian azuka 15" w/ rivits and a 12' zildjian K Custon dark splash regularly.

The 12" sounds great in most smaller settings with my hand or a stick. I am able to get a good sound without it being to loud.

The azuka has an uglier sound and works a little better in bigger, louder settings.

I have played an 18" el sabor crash at a show and was impressed. It also was big enough to allow me to use sticks on its bell and get a decent sound.

Yeah, even the 16" El sabor Handcrash has a bell that is ride-able with a stick.

Is that 13" El Sabor splash a new item?

Not really, the 13" came out around 1997, I guess. As far as I remember, it was advertised as one of the first hand/stick-splashes.

But it is still in the up-to-date Sabian catalogue, of course.

Hope that helps.

Another note on 10" splashes...

A recent drumming magazine had an article on percussionist Taiku Hirano, and said that he uses a Sabian HHX 10" Evolution splash in his setup. But their schematic made me think that he might be using that with some of his stick percussion. I'm not sure if he plays that cymbal by hand or not.

However, I have seen someone else quote someplace else (I forgot where I saw it) that a Sabian HHX 10" and HHX 12" cymbal are "paper thin" and "sound like glass".

I do not know if these are even referring to the same series of cymbals or not. Anybody know anything else about Sabian HHX 10" and 12" cymbals?
