Román Diaz on tumba, Tonito Martínez on tres dos, Angel Vila on quinto, Lázaro Rizo (guagua and vocals), Guillerme "El Negro" Triana (clave and vocals) Mario Dreke "Chavalonga," (vocals). Sweet.

Guarachon,
Thanks for posting that superb and laid back rumba, brings back many memories of hearing Chava sing in Cuba (R.I.P.). That's the way it's done!

Been a crazy last few months for me, gigs galore, tv appearances and tours.. Will post some pics up of the action as soon as I get some time to resize the images...

In the meantime, here is a short clip I shot during the 2nd week of the Cuban Festival (2 more weeks to go, yes! a 4 week Cuban Festival!)
Anyway, I was fortunate to be part of the 3 week Australian tour with OSVALDO CHACON (former singer from Cuban timba band "Bamboleo")

I wasnt playing in the following song, so I got my camera phone out quickly and snapped up this short clip.

Seen is my homeboy Steve on timbal/kit.

Enjoy!

This beat is a hip hop style and I use a goat toenail rattle in my left hand to slap and slide on the conga drum. It creates a good snare drum substitute. I ride on a suspended nut shell shaker that has a doggie squeeky toy attached which I accent with. This setup can be used to good effect for shuffles and swing too.

Is this Hippy Dippy conga technique? I post this in responds to comments made about bongo's posts. I'm not sure where to go with this I'm torn between being serious which I tend to be most of the time, and being light hearted about it. I noticed no one has responded to any of bongos latest post, since ABAKUA'S last reply. I've continued to view his post, and will at least say he has talent. I can also understand why some or many can be critical of his presentation. I will not judge him because I don't know what's in his heart. But It was rather ironic that I stumbled upon this video today. It made me laugh. I found it ironic if not outright funny that I could get the same impression from this performance by a highly a respected and accomplished percussionist, if not one of the best in the world and bongo's. Anyone care to comment.

I think most of us on this forum are supportive of those of the less educated. It's sort of like when Dr. Z posts something and most of us can't quite grasp what he's posting. Most of us won't respond, but some will get into it with him to try to understand.
When you post something to a board like this where there are collectively hundreds of years of expertise and it's anything less than the highest standard of excellence, then you are exposing yourself almost like a person taking off his clothes. That's brave, scarey, maybe sometimes reckless, and is always a tenuous position to put yourself in.
Many of us know the "good" technique when we see it. And many of us will have a knee-jerk reaction to something that reminds us of ignorance, especially when it represents our own struggle.
Like the Freddie Hubbard Video above.. Ouch! But, hey, probably way less of the public knew of Cuban conga technique in the 80s - right?
I just happen to know Bob "Bongo" from my yearly trips up the West coast. Coming from me - he is a great guy and possesses about the kindest heart you've ever witnessed. He's getting what he gets from the list, and I won't condem anyone who has criticism for him. He has asked for it by his postings and he'll get what's coming to him. We're all learning here, and everyone's getting better by showing up here in their own way.

Obvious to me that this gentleman has his "own style"of playing the bongos....I wonder if he has ever really played in a latin band with this style of his...guys understand that a lot of cats either learn on their own or "pick up" from here and there and never "studied" properly on the 'way' to playing the instrument and all that goes with it...I also noticed he had no "tapao/slap"....but lots of 'tricks".....Johnny Conga... :D
