here are the pics i have taken of these drums; as they have just arrived. they certainly appear to be cedro/cedar. these drums do not have the name 'classic' on them. i may assume they are older or ??? anyone here know? they do have a very warm sound and the tone is long lasting. they measure at 10, 11.5 and 12.5. i can only assume, again, that there is a size between the 10 and the 11.5. the size difference is evidant in the pic.

inside - note that there is a metal alma - not sure what the substance is around the alma. note the color of the wood on the inside - again my take as cedar.

Nice Congas , Ive played a set like those very warm tones indeed , but they are different sizes than traditional Cuban . I think there is a larger tumba 13"

Cedar? man that looks like Mahogany, with the flecking, and that one stave looks to have a cedar like grain, but it must be some Brazilian wood im not familiar with.

i know its not Cedro - or the species of Cedar in the Caribbean. And it doesnt look like the Mahogany Gon bops used.

if you try to dent it with your fingernail, does it dent?

i know my woods pretty well, but i have to admit this one has got me perplexed. the staves are 3/4 of an inch thick and have some similarities to my old cedar drum. i have put these next that one in this pic for comparison. i am guessing some type of cedar due to the thickness of the staves to compensate for the softness of cedar; or similar wood; certainly not luan or a cheap wood. these drums are also a bit light in weight in my opinion to be mahogany that is 3/4 of an inch thick. also due to the darkness of the wood on the inside of the drum ???? cedar ???? i am not that familiar with bauer other than they do make a 'cedro' drum. any others here that can help.

hey tony, when you come by we can look them over and compare to your older cedar drums.

Hey guys, regarding those Bauers, I got my pair several weeks ago from Blue Flame in the mountains of N.C. and the first time I played them out the guitar player told me he used to deal in wood. He looked and sniffed and said they were Afromosia. I really don't know. They sound good but I had trouble finding the sweet spot on the 11 inch using it as a quinto. Just thought I'd throw that into the mix!
Also, the benefit for my friend Kitty made 3,000.00 and still growing. It was a great day! Buck

The lack of sweet spot might be the head. My 11" and 12.5" drums are the best-sounding in my Bauer set.

These measurements are incorrect, as I read them. My Bauers are

quinto: 11"
conga: 11 3/4"
tumba: 12 1/2"

These are, as korman wrote, the same as for LPs.

I stand corrected (sort of). I talked to Ken Campagna, the main importer of Bauer in the U.S., and he says the Brazilians term their congas differently than we in the U.S. So, according to Bauer, my 11", 11 3/4", and 12 1/2" are conga, tumba, and supertumba, respectively.

But I'm not Brazilian! :p
