Vintage Gon Bops - a new project!

Just picked up a sweet little Gon Bops Requinto from blango, an excellent person to do business with for skins or old tubs, and knowledgeable about restorations as well.

The 9.5 inch version in mahogany.

It needs a little work, has some unusual features, but I've always been a fan of this model. It has the very attractive International hardward.

I'm going to take it to my dad's workshop, he's a high end painting contractor. A kind of "father and son project", like building a soap box car or whatever.

Anyways, it needs some work, but I've been wanting a project like this before, luckily this one doesn't need too much work.

I think I have just about enough skill to pull this off, but it's my first one so I'd be happy to hear any advice from some of you more experienced guys.

I think those little 9.5 requintos are so cool, and the vintage Gon Bops ones seem to be the ones to have. It should be a nice addition to the new Resolution (Valje)
set I'm getting next week.

I'll be sure and post here with the results and the process when it's done, it's so light, and I'm sure it's going to be a screamer, especially when I fit it with one of blango's excellent skins.

Someone had installed a kind of funky alma on it..

maybe it worked, the drum is pretty round, hard to tell from photos
though because the bearing edge is pretty warped.

If only old drums could tell the stories of their lives..

The bearing edge will need complete reconstructive surgery,

we can rebuild it, make louder, sweeter, stronger.

probably gonna get some new lugs too, I want this to be a
playable axe, folkloric and small jazz groups..

Walnut oil is apparently a good thing to coat it with.

very nice drum and story. please keep us updated of where this drum ends up.

Looks to me like someone recut that bearing edge. might be kind of hard on the hands, looks sharp almost like a tom or snare drum cut.

He's right about the bearing edge.. You don't want it sharp like a knife,, nor do you want it square like a 2X4, more like a rounded edge of a cup.

If you glue all the staves well, you won't need the hoops, and the hoops will rattle if not well mounted.
Though they look nice with 'em..
