Second in the Fiol googlethon
Again doesn't seem similar to other works

From an advertisement, obviously recent because of myspace reference.

Like the electric green-yellow highlighting, and the shadows of the drums

Joseph - the one you posted is by Susan Matthews, whose artwork inspired this thread. A link to her website is given in the other thread which is mentioned in the first post of this thread.

Last one today
Remember...
Although titled “Rumba Art Gallery”, it is not limited to works inspired only by rumba; it will feature works of art inspired by any percussive / rhythmic music tradition.

Definitely not from the rumba genre, but without a doubt percussive and rhythmic
Looks like a pencil drawing.
Great depiction of movement, with all the pencil strokes.
...the look in that one player's eyes...
...a drummers dream!

Artist unknown.

'Ochun Akuara' (2001)

Antonio Breton portrays the goddess Ochun Akuara, a Venus-like figure of the Afro-Cuban Yoruba religion. Ochun inhabits the confluences of rivers, suggested here by the soothing blend of blue and green tones, obscuring her form in the watery background. This deity is considered to be an "overflowing" woman, extraordinary, tall, clear, sensual, and sexually attractive. Irresistible in her allure, she always emerges free of all guilt. The artist depicts her in mixed media on canvas, first applying a base of oil paints before using acrylics to give form to the figure.

An old Pello Afrikan Album Cover.

I like the "flatness" or lack of dimensionality coupled with the varied designs of the drums superimposed onto the drummer's body.
The way he's leaning makes it swing.
The darkening fade up to his barely visible (sun?)glasses lends an air of mystery.
The hands are definitely the focal point of this piece.

The depictions of the musicians borders on being racist, however the artists respect
of the subject matter is apparent and counters this due to the accuracy in depicting
the ensemble and from his detail in the musicians expressions.

Hi BnB
I've looked at this painting a few times and observed and I just can't see how the depiction of the artists could be construed as racist. Please bear in mind that I am far from being an art aficionado in any way! I'm just curious to hear how you arrive at that.
BTW, I've been in touch with Sue Matthews and I am interested in getting one of her prints. I've decided on one and I just have wait for the right time to buy it - funds are a bit tight right now!

Chupacabra,
It might be an American thing, but the portrayal of the musicians reminds me of the
racist art depictions of black people that were to be seen in America and possibly other
countries during sadder part of history.
Namely the very black skin, the red lips, the round heads, were drawn in caricature, similar to
the Abukua painting. Performing an action that is stereotypically black.
I'm going to attach an example of this deplorable practice of stereotyping black people in
art. If there's any objection I will remove it. It's pretty disgusting. You'll be able to see the similarity then.

The latter depiction is definitely a clear example of the racist portrayals that African Americans and non-racists have experienced. When I look back at some of the cartoons and T.V shows that I used to watch as a child, not knowing any better, I (and all the other suburban white kids) used go out into the world thinking that that's how "those people" were and most kid's parents never really did anything to correct those misconceptions. Those were indeed shameful times.
I can see where you are coming from now.

While not exactly rumba, this is a piece of graphic art i made for an
anti-war drumming demonstration here in SF a while back.

I used images from Isla drums (the crowns). This piece of art
eventually became my username for this forum.

I'd be honored. Your more than welcome to make a shirt of it if you like.
I'd love to see that. I made stickers myself.
