Bottom ring of conga

Postby nickpilarski » Thu Feb 05, 2009 9:41 am

Is it possible to replace the bottom ring of a conga? I want to do it on my generation 1 gio's. I want to change out all of the gold hardware to silver but want to know how hard it will be. It looks possible but i dont know if it is or not.

Sorry for the slew of recent posts.

Nick,
I am sorry, but I guess it is hardly likely that you can get those spareparts. LP told me on
request that they do not do the footrings at all in their spare part catalogue at all!
You might want to try sifting through the immeasurable depths of the second-hand market...
But fishy and uncertain to the verge of ultra-rare (who would sell a conga footring?) as it looks,
perhaps you just sandray and your hardware?
I dunno, but be sure there is plenty of expertise of those who have refinished conga beauties already.

All the best
Mike

Hi

You could go to a place where the chrome metal and give them your hardware.

Easy and fairly cheap. It will come out as new without any scratch etc.

I have seen a set of Gio's on eBay in the past where the owner took the chrome hardware off of some cracked black Galaxie's. A switch was also made on the rim, from comfort to traditional (these rims are available from LP). The owner also sanded off all the polyurethane and oiled the wood. They looked pretty nice. I'd like to do this treatment to mine, but I don't have the time.

Another idea-- you can pick up some black Galaxie's, swith the hardware, and sell the black ones (now with gold hardware) back off again. That's probably what I'd do if the hardware wasn't available anymore.

Either that, or find a good chrome shop. But chrome shops are notorious for losing parts. You'd need to find one with a good reputation for doing work on small parts.

It will also prob. be cheaper than buying the genuine new LP part. Ive been able to get any spare part I need for LP as Ive used LP for over 15 yrs and have a long standing relationship with the official distributor here. You CAN get spare parts. Any shop that tells you different simply doesnt want to help you out because there is no money in it for them. Generally LP dont advertise their spare parts in catalogues. If you could imagine the extensive line up of instruments and what parts go into them....

I do not own Isla drums, would love to have some for my rumba group.
I am currently working with LP Classic Tumbadora, LP Classic Conga, LP Giovanni Galaxy Conga with mule skin.
