Bongos Not Bombs

Postby bongosnotbombs » Tue Dec 02, 2008 4:25 am

Thought I would post up in here and get a section rolling.

Here are a couple pictures of my defunct band BruMar. I played bongos. A sweet pair of Meinl Woodcraft bongos.
In the end they were too wide for me.

It was a fun band, our singer was from Portugal and could sing in 3 languages. A couple of classical guitars and myself.
We did a few bossa nova tunes, some fado and some flamenco adaptions.

This is a photo of the "Haight Street Rumba Society" :P
back when we could still hold the session at my place in the Haight.

The group is still playing together, but we move around the locations now.
There are a couple other congaplace members here, taikonoatama and windhorse.

Here are a couple photos of a fun little gig.

One of the places I play regularly is at Club Delux on Haight Street where they have a night called "The Word Party"
It's a night of jazz and poetry reading, sometimes the poets have the band play behind them, or just one of the musicians.

Anyways the drum seems to be popular with the poets and I get invited to various readings around town. Some of the poets
are published, and all of them serious about their art.

So this is an event in China Town I was invited to at a bar called Li Po where legend has Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg and others
hanging out at back in the day as they were fans of the poet Li Po that the bar is named after and it being close to North Beach.

Unfortunately it was held in their basement "theater" a little on the gritty side, but still fun as it was more of a semi-private event.

Finally a picture of myself and Sandy Perez and Sandy teaching class using one of my drums.

We are really lucky Sandy is so willing to teach. He's a great teacher and such a nice guy.

The other day we were giving him a ride and listening to Raices Africanas, the Afrocuba de Matanzas cd and he
non-chalantly says, "Oh I play the Iya on this song" "I play the gue-gue here".

Anyways if your visiting or living in SF or Berkeley I recommend his class, we go through a rhythm almost every class,
either a new one or building on a previously learned one.

Looks like I'm getting $ back from Taxes! I'm not sure why, what with billions in bailouts to pay and trillions in debt, ,,
but hey! I can come out to see you guys again this summer!
Will you go to Humboldt if they do the Afro-Cuban Dance Drum and Song workshops?

Steve those are some pretty nice drums there. Your best bet is to swing by one of the classes, either Sandy's or
Carlos Aldamas, or to hit up one of the rumbas either at La Pena or Radio Havana.

Hey Dave,
Great to hear your going to be coming back this way, I am surely going to Humboldt this year. Let's
get together in SF again like last time.

What was the term they used to describe Anga's Echu Mingua album. Rumbadelica?
I think that describes the Radio Havana Social Club Rumba pretty well.
I mean it is San Francisco after all.

these photos were taken by a young woman, with a nice camera, she didn't use a flash
out of respect for the players, which has made some of the photos a little blurry
