*CHOPS BUILDERS*

Postby tumbador79 » Fri Nov 19, 2010 4:18 pm

Greetings everyone!
I thought I'd put up some exercises I've been working on:
The first one is an adaption of a Paoli Mejias exercise I saw on youtube for strengthening the left hand - I expanded it to 3 drums and put in 16th notes so you swap hands each bar. Up to you what sounds you use - Paoli does it with muffs and slaps but I have been using various combinations..

Next one is based on paradiddlediddles that I came up with (although I'm sure its been thought of before..)
It's another one designed to swap hands and is really good for working on your double strokes! x is slap..

Enjoy

I like that second one. Get that one goin' at speed, and it's a workout.

I've submitted the following previously, but it's worth reposting in this topic:

Chops Builders from Heinrich Klingmann: "Heating the Congas"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQuj7Ag76Xw
Video is in 2 parts
Part 1: Watch Heinrich work it out
Part 2: A breakdown of individual sections

The exercise includes:
Double Strokes
5 & 7 Stroke rolls
Single & Double Paradiddles ( in eighths and triplets)
Diddle Triplets
Numerous transitions from duple to triplet feel
Playing across multiple drums
...and more!

On top of that he provides a link to a PDF file which shows the entire notation for exactly what he is doing in the exercise.
http://noten.heinrichklingmann.com/Klingmann%20Congastudy3.pdf
Nicely formatted for 3 pages of printing

It's a challenging exercise, and may take a while to digest, but well worth it, as it includes many different elements and transitions in one coherent exercise.

I have said this before and will say it again .."Improvisation" is not Teaching How!.....it shows the skills of the individual but my question will always be ok cool, thats hip, NOW HOW DID U GET THERE???? SHOW ME! cause as we have all seen now that there are many guys that can sit and improvise on up to 7 congas(Sammy Torres), but that is not teaching you how those skills were developed...show me! show me! show me!..so I would like to see the video where Paoli is actually showing how he got there, and not by jammin....yes we can say he learned from El Mole etc etc.. but that doesnt show me how either...Im talking 'methodology' of learning how to play the drum .. the same way they teach in Cuba, Venezuela, Columbia....

So I go to Heinrich Klingmann's page and there is only one video with him actually playing with anyone and that's from 1997. Now that's a pretty cold thing to say, but y'all get what I'm trying to say.
