Nothing terribly exciting about the guaguanco, but I think Rapa's quinto is the most tasty and in the pocket our group has yet performed. And it's the first time for a harmony with Dave's lead singing. http://dl.dropbox.com/u/10287309/school/guaguanco.MP4

Tonight/this afternoon, we had a really amazing and inspiring rumba with some Denver guys, and our threesome of Eric, Ritz, and I. After we were done Ritz, who doesn't shell out compliments easily, said how amazing, technically sound, and inspired my quinto sounded. I have to admit this summer's study, and just being around great players, has affected me. I remember Pili playing a cajon at La Peña my God, his otherworldly power, Jesus Diaz a master of what sounds tasty and beautiful, Sandy Perez who's tones and basses stop your heart, and David P teaching the classic quinto ride and finally something sinking in..
Thanks to all of you playing AfroCuban and passing on the dream.. :!:
I'm headed to Tennessee visiting the family through Christmas Day. No drumming there, but today's rumba was a nice send off!

We just had our one and only rehearsal for the next gig on Nov. 5th at the Grange Hall in Niwot.
This time there are 9 players and three sets of dancers. I think this is going to be a really good show!
Here's the order of songs:
1. Ellegua Rezo A' Cappella - Ibarago into bembe - Dave L. takes over at Abokenke and I pick it back up at Ochosi - end on Agayu.
2. I call out song intro to Obatala,
3. Iyesa - Dave L calls Ochün, and Eric calls Ellegua
4. Guaguanco - Congo Yambumba - Dave L calls it, and Rick and I are backup harmonies. Dancers Vacunao!
5. Comparsa - Dancers show off!

The gig was great fun! The crowd - half kids, and half parents - loved us! It was a fundraiser dinner (Cuban style - pork rice beans) for a local school.
