There are of course proponents of both, the old sonocs were cut, not bent, isla is cut not bent and If I'm not mistaken I think Junior may have cut his as well. Michel fom moperc modeled his original cubano style drums after juniors, some people say the cut staves are more stable since the wood is not under presure, others say since you cut throught he grain it does not have as pure of a tone, I've only played mopercs, sos and ritmo so I can't say anything about isla and junior, but the mahogany mopercs were probably to my ears the best all round sound of the three. Just my opinion.

I know the end user has a lot to do with it, as well as the heads, but damn those mopercs sound good! Especially the quintos.

Yes, i agree Mo Percs are a great drum, well made & great materials. But the Tax tariffs on Canadian products , adds to the price, add the cost & risk of shipping...it makes it hard for Mo Percs to be seen, heard & stocked in stores. But....this is a drum that you could buy without seeing & testing & will love the drums in a way you can not love a major brand consumer product drum. I've played all major brands made in Asia & the custom brands as well. Mo Perc is at my top 4 list !

Saludos, You need to listen the sweet sound produce by a Moperc Bongós. Not too many in this forum have one. My is 10 years old aging as a very fine red wine. But like many here are mounted on the wagon of mathew smith or sos they do not know what they missing. Moperc = superior sound,superior built, excellence.

No import duties/taxes from Canada for percussion instruments 0- NADA. As long as a NAFTA cert is provided, which Michels broker does in Vermont.
As far as shipping, goes the broker uses UPS , so that is the caveat risk of shipping- I shoul dknow I got my tumba cracked. But Michel fixed it like nothing happened

EDIT: Just for clarification, There is no import duties/taxes for importing Mopercs into the US with a valid NAFTA certificate.

Michel has a maple cubano for sale for 500, I really wanted to buy it, shipping to us? 165!!! Ouch! Would've probably pulled the trigger for less than 100, but.

What are peoples thoughts on moperc's carved staves rather than steam bent? I'm thinking of buying mopercs.

These shells that are not steam bent, do not durring the years of exposure to climate, humidity & attmopsheric changes...will not try to un bend which is the cause of many cracked stave shells. These staves are already married to the shape and is far more stable. An alternate stave design I was witness to as I helped Benny Sotello build drums inspired by Fat Congas but were not super fat were " 2 ply laminated maple, w/ exterior ply being furniture grade heart woods & interior woods of lesser grade & w/ cross grain to the exterior ply. These plys were not steam bent but were molded to the form after a special diluted adheasive was saturated into glue surfaces & into the cells of the wood. Later, they were glued & pressed into the forms. The staves were like an archers bow, like leaf springs they were very strong & stable yet thin. They did not require bands except at the foot of the drum & internal Alma ring. These staves were wide by design & not going to be lathe turned which would remove material from the seams where we wanted maximun bonding of the staves. We hand sanded the exterior edges & ended w/ a multi faceted drum shell with excellent strength to weight ratios ( similar to Volcano & Fat Congas ). A very resonant , strong & light , book matched stave drum that looked & sounded great !

I just went to the moperc site and couldn't find shipping costs. I live in Canada and I know whenever I've bought from the US I always insist on shipping [and I am talking about drums] via USPS - if they won't do - I don't buy.

The reasons are simple:

Cheaper than UPS or any of the other private shippers.

I don't believe that the private companies treat your package any better what so ever

And maybe the main reason is that having been hosed twice by the private companies so called 'brokerage fees' I swore never, ever again!. There are inflated and unstated and a total rip off money grab [thet literally black mail you with your own goods after you think you've paid for shipping and customs]. My bood pressure rise just typing this!!!!

So it might be worth asking if moperc will ship via Canada Post.

Everything is negotiable including freight.
If I were interested in that drum I would submit a price that included shipping.
Shipping freight into the US involves brokerage fees getting the freight across the border.

Does anybody have any experience shipping mopercs to europe ? Its looking riskier then more I find out..

Reiche drums are in germany and also Munz & Simonsen so maybe they're a better bet for me.
