I practice sometime 2 hours a day but I vary my "training" I always start out with congas to warm up my hands. Then transition into kit. I find that playing percussion into kits allows my hands to be relaxed and be able to flow well between kit and congas. I focus on different things so as to care for my hands/tendons. One must always remember that as much as you practice you have to care for the opposing muscles (push ups, stretching, rubber band exercies, finger tip push ups for the crazy few) in the hands so as to not form wrist, hand, and finger problems. Some days I just spend going through doing patterns with my feet. There is always something you can do to futher your practice
I can see practicing 8 hours a day if you've built up tendon strength correctly, but that takes years to build up to and even then if your not careful you'll do serious damage to your hands. Martial arts and rock climbing have taught me that you can not rush training, patience is a virtue and will pay off in the long run!
