Congas weren't created for Son/Salsa, they were created for Comparsa and Rumba. Only later did the conga enter the Son/Salsa genre. Congas are now used in a multitude of genres, funk, disco, afrobeat, jazz, latin jazz, rock, blues, bossa nova, etc.

Leedy can you explain to me how i can possibly be playing Latin jazz if im playing a jazz standard in a trio setting with a guitar player and bass player , and absolutely no one in the group are playing latin rhythms . How can that possibly be latin jazz ? John Santos , Bobby Sanarbria , Chembo , tito puente etc all play / played Latin Jazz . I have tons of recordings with congas added to straight ahead jazz groups . Dizzy used conga players for years while playing straight ahead jazz tunes and the addition of a conga drummer didnt make it latin jazz all of a sudden .

Thanks for your incredibly patronizing reply  I happen to be 38 and not a 2 year old but i have no idea what point your trying to make here . I know the history of both latin jazz and jazz as i am a huge fan and collector of the music . Your little history lesson is nice but thats whats wrong with its in the past . There are many ways to play jazz on many many many instruments and just because there are no trap drums dosent mean its not jazz , it also dosent automatically become latin jazz when the congas are added . Wheres the latin jazz in a trio with montunos , tumbao etc etc etc playing old swing standards ? Its a different approach that suits smaller venues like cafes etc .

So Jaco Pastorius and Don Alias playing Miles Davis's tune here are playing Latin Jazz because there are congas? Really? I don't think so.

Here's some latin jazz

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GSa7gLKcZdw

David Sanchez, latino playing jazz, latin jazz.

But really, come on folks, music blends, that's why being a musician is so cool, you can take jazz harmonies and put latin rhythms and acll it whatever the hel you want, it's just good music to me. just like blue bossa, is that jazz? latin jazz? bossa nova jazz? Call it how you like, it's good music.

I think You are mistaken as to what is Latin Jazz and what is Jazz the video you posted is Jazz not Latin Jazz you need to get fact straight as to what is jazz and what is Latin jazz . Listen to the way he is playing Latin Jazz is when playing a straight tumbao not a skip to ma lou fashion as Don Alias is playing .

this Latin Jazz http://youtu.be/78CO7F8TXgE

This american Jazz http://youtu.be/bZTRmnCKLOw

listen and learn

Read my post again Leedy. You didn't understand what I am saying. I know Jaco and Don are playing jazz. I post it as an example of jazz with congas that is not latin jazz.

Tu no sabes na' - el que sabe soy yo.
Not a productive attitude, leads to unnecessary apparent disagreements. It is possible that others also know some of the many things you know. Could be someone even knows more than you about some things. Maybe even about some things related to latin jazz and jazz. Respeto y humildad, mi hermano.

Evolution

Versatility (of players)

Improvisation

- is what constitutes the essence of the many shades of jazz,
including Latin Jazz.

Just my 3 cents... :P
