A very cool woman in the audience drew some caricatures during one of my recent gigs. Reminds me of some of those old school album covers.

Hey Gordie,

All are great drums!!! Some people just do not understand that bias is a habit. Hope to see you around. Keep up the gigging and fun. You need to drop by the museum again sometime; it has expanded.

All the best,

B

A while back I was asked to be a mentor for a couple of performers who were going to be in a talent show for an organization here in SF called the Community Housing Partnership. http://www.chp-sf.org/about.html . A non profit whose mission is to provide support and housing for the local homeless. The talent show featured formerly homeless people that have been assisted by the program. I was honored to mentor 2 groups of performers featuring percussion. The first group was a conga player accompanying a tap dancer and the second was a percussion ensemble. It was a lot of fun and I gained a lot of respect for this organization. To top it off, one of my groups won first prize!

The other group was called Brass Monkey, they played Afroblue and that Santana song Jingo. Funny enough I had played with the xylophone player before in Golden Gate Park a couple of times.

Another caricature of myself on bongos, accompanying a poet at an all-women poetry event. I really like these little drawings.

Some shots of me and a video from this year at Burning Man 2012. I fixed up an old Ludwig bass drum and participated in some parades. HIghlights were the "Billion Bunny March" and playing a jazz funeral AND "Mardi Gras" with the venerable Burning Band. I know it's not congas, but whatever....

Man Dave, you'd be surprised. The basic patterns for the New Orleans stuff is tresillo on the bass, upbeats on cymbal or son clave on bass, upbeats on cymbal, down beats with accent on the & of 4, etc. Seriously, I was looking at all these patterns going, hey, I already know this. Reminded me a lot of guagua patterns which helped with the bass/cymbal technique.

Of course the New Orleans/Cuba relationship, not to mention the historical Congo Square in New Orleans has been discussed before.

Anyways, these guys were stoked to have me around. I was the only guy crazy enough to bring a bass drum along.
