Hand drum set ideas?

Postby trizon » Fri Jul 06, 2012 3:48 am

I've been wanting to put together a small hand drum set, but I'm looking for ideas. I play bongos mostly, but play djembe too. I've thought about using a 10" djembe with bongos mounted on stand with possibly an 8" splash. I haven't thought about what to use as a foot pedal.

I wanted to know if you guys had any ideas about what might make a good hand drum set? I would like to keep the kit rather small, but to incorporate some different sounds.

Hi trizon,

Putting a hand drum set together is really a matter of personal preference. Bongos + djembe can work well, plus a splash. You didn't mention any congas. Is that in your vision for the set? You also mentioned a foot pedal. I know there's been a bunch of foot pedal discussion threads. Seacrh "gajate". However, you don't state the purpose of the pedal.

Yes I would consider congas, but to be honest, they are too expensive for me. About the pedal. I would mainly use this to keep time and add to the beat.

What would the pedal-beater be hitting? Cheap-ass used, beater congas (Aspires, etc, probably under $100) may be available evia ur local Craigs List. Also, consider adding a different size djembe for a tuning difference.

I'm not sure what the pedal would be hitting. Do you have any suggestions?

If you enter "gajate" in the search window a series of threads will show you a variety of uses: Blocks, bells, etc.

Have you considered a cajon? I thought of adapting mine to use a bass drum pedal. I'd have to use my heel to operate the pedal. You can make your own cajon. Take the guts out of an old hifi speaker and attach a 1/4" luan "tapa" or front panel, and you're in business. You can even stretch an old guitar string across the front behind the face plate, if you want for some snare sounds.
