Republicans Talking About Restricting Cuba visits

Postby Mr. Conga » Tue Aug 28, 2012 10:35 pm

* During their convention election, to support Mitt Romney a spanish speaking senator, gave an iterview in CNN espanol channel
a few minutes ago.

*Stating that one of the changes Romney plans to do as far as economics/and foreign polotics is restrict the trips to Cuba.
Clearly stating that they are against the. In the tone of voice he use he said Romney and himself were against such trips.
They stated that they only approved "FAMILY of "visits" once or twice a year. That the new rule that came during Obama's presidency is too loose, and supports the Castro Regime as he said. That many people have used the freedom to go to Cuba, to make Tourist trips, business trip, and to fund Castro's regime support.

I did not catch the senators name, but he was there in support of Romney. And that this is one of the TOPICS Romney plans on speaking about, and plans to make changes concernig this if he is eleceted President of the U.S

* I find this topic, very important to conga forum members here.
One of the reasons is that a lot of us would like to make a trip to Cuba. Some of our members have made the trip already.
Before the Obama change to the ebargo law concerning trips it was even a TABOO to openly say how American citizens were getting around to visit Cuba, after the Obama change i saw it as positive and that more members were just flying withot problems.
Still i noticed that not everyone was willing to share what airline or airport they used.

I am not in favor of The Regime, when it opresses people in the Isla, and also Forbides the personal economic grwoth of Cuban individuals in their land, forbide freedom of word.

I am not in favor of Obama, for reelection even though he allow freedom for Americans to visit Cuba.
He's polotics contradict, what he says he stands for, and he changes his position on Values too often.

How ever i do not support Romney Banning trips Cuba.

Vote grabbing hypocrisy!

The visitors from the USA do not compare with the travel and trade from Europe, Canada, Latin America and the rest of the world.

Meantime the US supports totalitarian and sexist regimes in the middle east and not to mention China.

In saying that, there is a theory that the Cuban regime deliberately will not engage in any constructive talks that could lead to the easing of the embargo, so that they remain in power by conveniently blaming the US "enemy" for their mismanagement of the economy.

Regarding how to travel..if you are in Southern California, just walk over the border catch a flight from Tijuana and on your return just walk back over the border with no questions asked.

Well said.. Derbeno

thanks for commenting.

interesting enough the Covention and talks regarding the Cuban embargo and Traveling polocy so happend to be when they are in the state of Forida where we know there is abundance of the Cuban community. They want their vote by sayiing they are against that totalitarian Cuban Castro's regime. Those are the word they used to depict the Cuban government.

I since a tone of hypocrite politics behind the voice of the Republican representative, answering CNN's interview, that rep so happend to be Cuban American. And spoke so bad about American travelers visiting Cuba, he did not mention EUROPEANS nor that they've had the freedom to travel to Cuba for way longer then us in America.

This mans voice, and comments were very harsh, he almost said people in the US are making unexcused trips to Cuba, to have fun trips and pick up souveniers , such as Congas. The senator spoke in a very mad and upset tone, he almost made it clear that Romney will be president, and he will VETO the Cuban traveling current law for U.S citizens/Residents.

I though the topic would interest our members, i wish you all could have seen the interview, or research it, if traveling to Cuba has been one of your future goals, or dreams.

So i thouhght the way he spoke on the topic is so RELEVANT to this forum we enjoy.

This has been happening for a very long time. Its always the same. Republicans win more restrictions Democrats win the opposite happens. I'm sure its got to do with most Cubans being mostly republican and Florida being a key state in elections.
I myself think the embargo only serves as an excuse for the Cuban goverment since they blame everything on the US.
Its been on way too long and proven not to make a difference as far as toppling the Cuban goverment.
Many of the older Cuban Americans are so close minded that they wont consider any other option. I always wonder if the embargo was lifted maybe communism would be over in the island.

I couldnt help but chime in...Look the embargo hasnt worked doesnt work period..there are 60 other countries now inside of Cuba...they dont need us or our money..trust me...they are getting a LOT of help from these other countries..Like they are going to build a 1.5 billion dollar golf course in Varadero...with half a million dollar homes lining it...with NO American involvement...Look I know for a fact that the Cubans in Miami will not move back to the island even if they could...the Castro generation in Miami is almost gone due to age...the young Cubans in Miami could care less about the island as they have all they need in Miami..for them it would be going backwards..and there are 18 airports in the U.S. that are now flying direct to Cuba..so go ..why not?...BTW Obama did this...he opened the door to Cuba...
Look there are 14 million Cubans and one Castro if they really wanted him gone don't you think that would have happened already??.. or would you say the Cubans are afraid of him?..Nope not happening...republicans are narrow minded people...and are not for anybody but themselves..as they keep showing their true colors...Even when Castro dies..it will not change the island per se.. Even the Chinese are now drilling oil off the coast of Cuba with their permission and it's now pissed off our gov't because we wanted to do that...cause the chinese are closing in on our country as well..they ARE NOT COMMUNIST- THEY ARE CAPITALISTS! under the guise of communism..which is all bullshit...as well as Castro's regime is bullshit...the world runs on money, not socialism and communism has proved not to work for the masses..period..ok im done..and can we keep politics off this forum??? This is about the drum...yes im guilty too.. Thank you...

Don't apologize JC, you can't take the politics out of the drum. The cops shut down the Central Park rumba last week because we had too many people blocking the walkway, "we are getting complaints...". We moved to a different spot y seguimos guarachando. Not the first time or the last that the rumba gets shut down by the powers that be, either in NYC or in Cuba. Hundreds of years of history before us:
"El amo no quiere que yo toque el tambor." Lamento Esclavo, Conjunto Guaguanco Matancero
"Quien se atrevera a quitarme la libertad?" Yoruba Andabo

Jorge another reason why they shut down the rumba because drunk ass stupid mofo's started throwing bottles and garbage into the lake as well as blocking the walkway...I played on those benches for years never had a problem ..everyone was respectful to one another and we didnt litter if there was any, we picked up after ourselves...it only takes a few to ruin it for the many...

Thanks fo your opinion Johny, well apreciated, i agree with you on most things.

However, this is not really about who is right or wrong on politics, or who support Castro, or dosnt.
To me the topic is about Us gong to Cuba.

A lot of you guys make it sound like is real easy as simple as taking a plane to Las VEGAS.
WELL, NOT REALLY.

Did you know that a lot of young people who have been to Cuba , and get that stamped on their citizens passport , have been denied Government jobs in the US ? because they visited a communist country, and certain gov people are afraid we are becoming educated by Castros and Che's principles.

Is about the drum!.... not about anything else, We want go study the drum from old school Rumberos. The real Habaneros, Matanzeros

WE , will rather go to Cuba, then go to Seattle , with all do respect to you, my brotha.

But the topic is important to the Congero's, who have Love FOR Cuba, and want to visit numerous times.
I do not want to be restricted of that Freedom again.

I want to get Cuban old drums straight from Matanzas. On the interview that Cuban senator , said they are going their for music lessons, field trips, bringing back Cuban objects, Cuban made items, souvenniers what eva U wanna call it.

Is about the Rumba drum, they wanna forbid us to learn Cuban culture,or to associate with people in the ISLAND,
but i know Johny you probably feel like you have learned it ALL, any thing or any rhythm there is to learn from Cuba, you feel like you got it on LOCK. So you can care less about the the ones who wanna go study in Cuba, rather then camp in Seattle bro.

I wanna be able to go to Cuba, like people in EUROPE, unlimited stay llike ABAKUA stayin and learning for months. I wanna feel like i will be able to go agin in a future, not be restricted. I want anyone who wants a Cuban made drum to be able to go and get one. Who ever wants to help Cubam Island people shuld be able to, what if i wanna support a Mission out there? people in the news are telling me i can't because of blah blaah blah!...?

No hable mal de nuestra rumba, asere. Seriously, it has been quite a few years since I saw ANYONE at the Central Park rumba throw garbage in the lake. Certain other infractions do occur all the time, I have to agree with you on that, including lack of respect for self and others, but no more than in the 70s, 80s, 90s. "Everyone respectful to one another" at the rumba, what planet were you on? I think sometimes we tend to remember the "good" old days by selectively forgetting most of the bad stuff that happened. But usually the disrespectful ones get put in their place by the rest of us, and almost everyone leaves curao by the end of the night. No, we are talking about another brand of repression here, not the self-repression kind, and we still do pick up (most of) our garbage before we leave. Last week, more than one person actually brought empty garbage bags from home that were full by the time we left. Likewise, trying to justify the embargo as a means of pressuring the Cuban government for much needed social and political change in Cuba is just absurd, it hasn't worked in the past 50 years and it is unlikely that it ever will. It does, however, cause much collateral damage, helping break up families, causing much pain to ordinary people, making it even harder for sick Cubans to get lifesaving medications from abroad, and lowering the quality of music in all the other countries in the world outside Cuba, without having the intended impact to reduce repression by the Cuban government. No, there are other reasons behind the restrictions, which receive more binational and bipartisan support than the title of this thread would imply.

Your right Jorge..pero..I grew up in the Bronx at a time when it was burning down, junkies, apartment broke into twice, burnt out twice..that is some reason why I left all that drama behind...and as long as I played on those benches ..people were always respectful of each other and the park itself...I understand certain elements did what they did...Im not blaming everyone...it pisses me off at the mentality ..that seems pervasive today, as it was almost 40 years ago, and people littered then too(and it was the beginning of the Grafitti age where no building was left undone and spray canned)...and yes at times we got run out too for being too crazy, loud and high..can't leave that out...everybody high on something...that is why i say what i say ...and it is always a few that make it bad for the many...I LOVE CUBA!...been there once and hopefully I will go next year..I am half Cuban and grew up in the music....I love the people of Cuba and the Cubans in Miami...just so u know...politics?..It sucks...whether here in the states or in Cuba....

Over my visits to Havana Ive met several US citizens, my most recent trip I stayed for 6 months, Americans go in easy and without any hassles via Nassau Bahamas, get their 30 day visa in Nassau, Cuban Immigration at airport do not stamp your passport, they stamp the visa. One particular businessman friend of mine, lives in Miami, travelled to and from Cuba via Nassau about 5 times during my stay there. Never had a problem.
I travel on an Argentine passport from Australia, I have no marks whatsover from any of my trips to Cuba in the passport to show I was there, my friends who at times have travelled with me who have become citizens and travel with Australian passports do not have their passport stamped either.
Same goes with countless friends of mine who have been to Cuba, travelling in with Italian, Portuguese, Uruguayan, Chilean, and many other nationality passports, none get stamped in Cuba. Only the visa gets stamped. A little 50cm x 50cm bit of paper.
Typical tourist visa below. Immigration keeps one half, you get the other, on departure, immigration keeps the one you've had. No stamping to passport.

Derbeno, thanks for posting that link from the rumba yesterday, I had not seen it. I had to work yesterday but those are the guys I play with all the time, and that is a typical rumba in Central Park. Most of the same guys were playing when the cops came last month (after the Dominican Day parade) and made us move from that spot. Pupy on cajon (not 3/2) in the blue shirt is a monster, as is Matanzas (yellow shirt) playing 3/2 and tumbadora. Pescao (singing in the beginning) is a great guaguanco singer. Zambi (second singer) brings tremendous energy to the songs. Cheo gets great sound out of the quinto (any quinto), here he is playing so loud the mic is clipping (overloaded) and the sound is distorted in the video.
No bottles or garbage in the lake, most garbage generally winds up in garbage bags, that is not the problem.
