Is the site safe? I get warnings when I visit

Postby burke » Tue Apr 15, 2025 5:28 pm

I still love this site but when I do get dire warnings from antivirus software.

I do it anyway, but it makes me nervous.

I'm here today because I was looking for arthritis advice from Jorge in the search [he's given a lot IIRC and he's an actual doctor].

Glad to see a few posts this year. :0)

The one FB site I found with old members is 95% "Look at me!" videos.

That's fine, but I want more meaty, useful conversations.

Anyone have any insights into all this scary warning stuff? Safe to ignore? Ways to visit the site some assurance?

Hi burke,

I still visit the site every day, even though it appears to be a sleeping beauty. I have never gotten any problems whatsoever, nor does my antivirus program report any trouble. Without any guarantee, I would disregard the warnings.

I have always found that FB fosters a particular kind of (non-)communication that I am not willing to support. You nailed my issue with "95% Look-at-me" .

All the best for your arthritis!

Thanks Thomas!

Ironically I was checking to see if my take/advice was accurate for another fellow senior on a FB site called Conga Drums and Percussion - Michael Pluznick is an admin - a congaplace alumni. Part why I joined :)

I'm getting some hand arthritis, but manageable.

I'll come by and check in once and a while too - one thing I'll say for FB - they tell you if someone responded.

Here you have to check in like a smuck

Hope its obvious I am joking

Be well!

Hey Burke,
Good to hear that your arthritis is manageable! I could say the same. Was diagnosed with gout when I was 60, and have been taking allopurinol since then. I definitely feel the arthritis in my extremities, but daily visits to the gym and stretching along with a healthy diet, I believe, are helping. And it feels like playing drums helps to keep my arthritis in check. I'm not sure if that's a thing. I might be making that up. ??

Me and allopurinol have been going steady even longer!

It [gout] used to manifest in the classic fashion with my big toe ... but I have always been a poor player when I use my feet :)

I use a brace like this one [more for the padding than anything else] ... but not all the time. Voltaren as well.

I should stretch too

Nice to hear from you.

I hope the brace helps rather than hinders your playing, and that you are always improving Burke.

Hi everybody.

I’m still there too, though I also use Facebook a lot. There’s a lot of « Look at me, listen to me, read my interesting publications, and did you notice how good I can play? », indeed. Where the people who post the most are not necessarily the best players in the world… ☺
I consider Facebook a communication tool, like this forum. But some people use it as a bragging tool, or to tell the entire world what they’ve eaten yesterday, or where they’re currently making holidays (« Please rob me » ☺). You have to ‘tack’ between all these to find interesting posts or discussions, but nevertheless, I still use it.

Burke and Windhorse, sorry to read about your health issues. (I won’t tell mine ☺) I know some people using the same type of brace (there are several models), and it seems to work.

Re : the virus warning, I guess it’s a so-called « false positive ». I browse this forum everyday, with different computers (yes, I have a ‘computer breeding’ ☺) and never had this issue. I guess you antivirus software is too conscientious, which is better than the opposite anyway.

Stay safe, all of you.

Thanks, but minor ...just need to adapt and evolve :)

I found the facebook site I was referencing while looking to see if maybe congaplace had migrated to facebook.

What I found first was a FB site named 'Conga Place Annex' where the "About" read :

'This forum is designed to expose the ass holes of Conga Place that make comments with out any Knowledge of what they are talking about.'

I had a pretty good idea who might have started that page and I lurked for a while. Both the page and the founder seem to have moved on since its inception. ... but not a happy message so I moved on too :)

The 'look at me page' I hang out on now, has some good stuff every once and a while and some of the players are really good!. There is one fellow Canadian who's relaxed effortless technique blows my mind [Jorge Luis Papiosco].

... and I learned something completely new on the arthritis post. "Cordes" ... a braided soft nylon rope laid around the rim. I just tried my own version with some round insulating foam cord I have lying around and a bit of glue gun ... if it works out I'll do all my rims.

Yes, I know this page. No interest. Nasty all-knowing embittered people don't interest me. May they live as far as possible from me. :)

I am one of the admins on this page :
https://www.facebook.com/groups/850541078350190/

and moderator on this one :

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1003703386355137/

For both pages, you'll have to answer a (very) short questionnaire, just to prove you are not a spamming robot.

There are many other interesting pages, sometimes run by forum members, for instance :

https://www.facebook.com/groups/657966647623440/

https://www.facebook.com/groups/548993716168850/

https://www.facebook.com/groups/545311175479692/

https://www.facebook.com/groups/157599624373869/

But you all know it can quickly become time-consuming.

Have a nice day, you all.

Thanks for those links Chtimulato !

I found one already, but many of the rest also look extremely interesting to me as well.

Cheers!

Wow, I didn't know Papiosco is in Canada now.

I just found this clip with Papiosco on timbales:

https://youtu.be/fV-Km7dRtxA?si=zH6oM19pJMO34iMM

I'm not exactly a fan of Latin Hip Hop, but I like this one somehow. Nice piano, too.

I came across this one because I found Raimundito was playing congas in the band. He was one of my batá teachers in Havana in 2009. He could have been my son, but I had to work hard learning some Ñongo conversations from him. Just another humiliating experince. He is a good singer, too. He seems to be associated with Añá Bí, the oldest fundamento tambor in Havana, if not Cuba:

https://youtu.be/pRrhnJZMWD0?si=CKbJL7EKECe51uFS

I had the honour playing the okónkolo of the set on a toque for Yemayá in a house at the Malecón. We had a beautiful view at the sea while we were playing. Raimundito was singing, and Película (ibaé) was on the iyá. He was living in Italy at the time but was probably on a visit in Cuba. A heavy hitter ... I also knew the aláña or dueño (owner, holder) of the tambor, Juanito "El Súcio", Irete Meyi (ibaé). He became one of the babalawos at my Ifá initiation in 2012.

Greetings,
Thomas

I admit I did not really follow him.

Enviable technique. I often think it must be an asset to have strong upper body, arms and shoulders for better control.
