I'm not sure there's much my life that can shed information or experience on the fine musicians who grace these pages. Born and raised in Manhattan in 1963, I left NYC at the tender age of 20 for the Caribbean, and lived a life on the water. Having sailed to most any isle you can name, I found a musical education that spans many styles, beliefs, religions, and friendships. Then it was off to Argentina, where I bathed in the Latin culture -- from tango to quarteto... Though now back in NY (outside the city), I have spend a better part of the last decade visiting and writing about Cuba, where my passion for conga and bongo took hold. I've spent many an hour with gentlemen (and ladies) of enormous, and sadly unrewarded, talent. From street corners in La Habana Vieja, to the homes of Chucho Valdez to the late Ibrahim Ferrer & Compay Segundo. More than anything else, I have joined congaplace to learn -- about these wonderful instruments and how to extract the most of my limited abilities. Thanks for having me... -- Mark
