A contemporary style of Merengue. Made popular around the 1980's by Pochi y su Coco Band, Jossie Esteban y la Patrulla 15, and especially Los Hermanos Rosario. Characterized by the "A lo Maco" rhythm played by the tambora.

I don't know if the following rhythm is a tradional merengue pattern but when i went to S. Domingo I saw that, most of the time, the conguero is playing this pattern when a tambora player is in the band. If no tambora is playing you can alternate by playing the Merengue pattern suggested by Gilson Silveira (which is basically a tambora pattern with stick played on congas).
