Oak has a brighter sound than Cherrywood , which has a warmer sound to it ....at least that is the way it sounds to my ears...."JC" Johnny Conga..... :D

Since BC times Africans and Chinese discover the property of some woods to modify the wave/sound interacting with them, that's becouse as the human body does, the woods absorve some frequencies and deliver others,( depending on the texture, thickness, porosity, fiber, etc). But the finishing products which we could apply to the wood could modify the outcome.Dr. Zaragemca

I have a set of cherry wood skin on skins, my buddy has oaks. Cherry is definitley a mellower, dryer sound, very warm, not as bright as the oak. Probably better drums for traditional music or for recording, but not for loud live situations. Cherry also is a more stable wood, which is why I bought them, my buddies oak skin on skin were going a bit out of round, even with the alma.

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and in an abundance of wonderful blessings!

I have, probably one of the last sets of "Fat" Congas, which happen to be Cherry wood. I totally agree with what Abure Pcastag has stated, Cherry is quite mellower, and is great for recordings, or working with acustical groups (guitar, flute). The wood is also very light in weight, a big plus for most of us. The drawback, of course is if you are playing in a loud band with horns, electric guitars and the sort, of course you can mic them, but you still sacrifice some sound in the process.

I still prefer Cherry to Oak though. I'm currently in the process of stripping, staining, and refinishing my LP Palladiums, I'll post some pics when I'm done. I figured that since no one wants to buy them, I might as well make them look appealing to me. They are looking awesome my brothers!
