I'm repeating something I brought up in another post but the topic invites the repetition.
I kind of tuned out (on second thought - I did just plain tune out) for the 80's, but the 70's when I was a teen was (and still am) indeed a fan of the Santana stuff you mentioned. But in the not often thought of percussionwise pop & folk genra's a couple still stand out for me as being very cool.
Early James taylor has some bueatiful-tasty conga playing (mostly by Russ Krunkle {sp?} I beleive)
Early and mid Doobie's of course.
Ray cooper does some awsome stuff on early Elton John (I know, I know... but really ... once upon a time he wasn't bad joke -Elton that is).
I just recalled an 80's thing. Some nice, nice stuff on "Night and Day" (Joe Jackson) done by a female percussionist who's name escapes me at the moment.
A lot of the stuff I've mentioned is likely in the catagory of "made up" patterns, but personally I have a lot of time for made up stuff.
Anyho, theres my 2 bits.
