I have always been a huge Santana fan (specially the original band - Chepito, Carabello & Shrieve) basically because of its percussion parts (dah!). That music was recorded before I was born, but I discovered it during my teen years.

Now I’m rediscovering some of the 80’s bands, such as INXS and Duran Duran just because of the same reason: lots of percussion fills everywhere – specially cowbell’s. David Lee Roth’s songs also have some nice percussion parts.

Which are your favorite percussion oriented songs from that era? Who are the guys/gals who recorded those tracks? Any anecdotes to tell from those of you who had the opportunity to play those songs with your bands?

I'm repeating something I brought up in another post but the topic invites the repetition.

I kind of tuned out (on second thought - I did just plain tune out) for the 80's, but the 70's when I was a teen was (and still am) indeed a fan of the Santana stuff you mentioned. But in the not often thought of percussionwise pop & folk genra's a couple still stand out for me as being very cool.

Early James taylor has some bueatiful-tasty conga playing (mostly by Russ Krunkle {sp?} I beleive)

Early and mid Doobie's of course.

Ray cooper does some awsome stuff on early Elton John (I know, I know... but really ... once upon a time he wasn't bad joke -Elton that is).

I just recalled an 80's thing. Some nice, nice stuff on "Night and Day" (Joe Jackson) done by a female percussionist who's name escapes me at the moment.

A lot of the stuff I've mentioned is likely in the catagory of "made up" patterns, but personally I have a lot of time for made up stuff.

Anyho, theres my 2 bits.

I am also working on a New project with Michael Schrieve and his band "Tangletown" here in Seattle. It's a fusion of rock-latin;funk and even some "speed metal". We have already recorded a 'demo' which includes Chepito's tune "Baila Cha Cha". Chepito's son is touring, I believe with Eric Clapton and is a drummer. Chepito lives in his country today as a "King"., form what I've heard from Michael.........."JC" Johnny Conga..... :;):

That's great! I have his Fascination CD and really liked the free jam approach they gave to the songs. Also have the Abraxas Pool CD and it is one of my definite favorites.

When will the material be ready? Any site with info?

I really don't know, but I do know that he has been collaborating with Santana, and maybe working on some kinda deal with him and the band as far as recording and a possibly tour down the road. Michael has gotten "the itch" back, and is rareing to go. He is also a composer and has written quite a few tunes over the years and continues to write. We will be appearing ever Tuesday at "The Nectar" in Fremont(Seattle), starting Feb. 3rd. So if your coming to Seattle , come check us out....."JC" Johnny Conga....ps Michael is using another drummer with him, and myself on perc.

I think that beside Santana, Irakere has a lot of responsibility for incorporating percussion to the American pop scene.

That aside: who played percussion for David Lee Roth? I know the drummer was Gregg Bisonnette.
