Can anyone give me a good groove that could be played on Me and Julio. (1 guitar/singer - 1 congas/percussion - No Drums)

hmm, with only one conga eh?
The song's called "Late in the Evening",, We played that song in a one gig cover band.
I played a three drum Guaguanco.
Probably what you're going to want to do is the Tumbao or low drum part to Guaguanco.
This song swings off of the bomba more than most, and that's the reason..

Tahnks for your reply. I think we're talking about 2 different songs (Both great songs - Late In The Evening is my alltime favorite song)

I have conga, quinto, tumbadora, bongos and some cymbals but I just couldn't come up with a good groove for "Me and Julio down by the Schoolyard"

Pls let me know if you have come up with something

Ah you're right! Sorry! You still might try Guaguanco,, though Mambo works on almost anything...

Hey Ya'll,
I LOVE that tune. "When the radical priest come and get me released we's all on the cover of Newsweek." Paul Simon is one of the better songwriters out there, a real sardonic wit!
On the original cut Airto played cuica, ganza, and some kind of a small drum (bongo? talking drum?) with a stick/hand muting technique. A later remix for the MTV video included congas and shekere. This tune is usually my chance to play cuica, and the audience always asks to see how "that" sound was created. They've heard it on cds and in movies but don't usually know what it is. To play "Me & Julio" on conga I would play a mambo, samba, or even a simple mozambique, depending on how the other musicians feel the groove. Trust in your creativity and you will no doubt come up with an original interpretation we can all admire! Great tune and boa sorte!!
