Hola David,

That should do it! Just clik on "add file" and it should post if the file isn't to big.

Muchas gracias,

OK, it looks like its appearing in my last post as "Download attachment [ TIFF Image ]" I clicked on that and was able to view it. A word of explanation concerning my chart:

This is the basic marcha I'm sure everyone is familiar with. I used the term "modern" to distiguish it from older folkloric patterns. I did not mean to imply contemporary timba patterns, although they are for the most part, embelishments of this pattern. The regular noteheads are open tones and the triangle noteheads are slaps. Both are played with the right hand. The strokes without noteheads are heel-tip strokes played with the left hand.

I'm sorry David, I meant "add reply". For some reason I can't open the Tiff file you just posted. That's OK you clarify it on your last post. I thought you were referring to some new kind of marcha. Thanks for your help!

re: Explorations in Afro Cuban Druma and Dance / pilon rhythm

Hey TampabayRey,
I just discovered your question to me from last month. Sory for the late reply. Concerning registration for 2006; I know it's happening July 22-29, but I noticed that they don't have the info for 2006 up on their site yet. I would check back to the site in early 2006 to register.

franc,
Regarding pilon, I've ssen it and heard it, but haven't played it myself. I beleive that Changuito demonstrates it on his "History of Songo" video. The main rhythmic motif consists of two consecutive strokes: bombo and the main beat immediately following bombo. In other words, a main beat with a pick-up. I know it's rather abstract to talk of it. The dance is clearly based on this motif as well. It looks very funky.

Hola Franc and everyone,

Hope this helps out re the Pilon...
In my timba band, we have a song in Pilon, the pattern I play is similar to that shown by Changuito. I use the pattern shown to me by Cuban percussion master Daniel Lopez (Albita, Gloria Estefan, Ricky Martin)

In another band I play with which is more experimental music fusing acid jazz, funk, ska, reggae, timba, afro cuban drumming etc, I play an open pilon adaptation in a ska section of one of the arrangements.

History:

El Pilon fue creado por Enrique Bonne en la provincia de Oriente de Cuba hacia finales de los años '50, y continuado hacia principios de los '60. Mucha de la musica de Bonne fue grabada por Pacho Alonso y su grupo, Los Bocucos.

The Pilon was created by Enrique Bonne in teh Oriente (eastern province of Cuba) in the late 1950's, continuing into the early 60's. Much of Bonne's music was performed and recorded by Pacho Alonso and his group Los Bocucos.

- Jose Luis Quintana 'Changuito'.

From his History Of Songo video/booklet.

An example below: (for 2 tumbadoras/congas)

Top line in 2:3 clave
Bottom line is a variation.

O- open tone
P- bass like sound with palm of hand
B- bass sound with the palm of hand
S- slap
T- tips of fingers
M- muffled sound made by pressing against the skin with the hand
