Touche, Diceman. I know who your talking about! That party is very difficult to deal with!

Your 100% correct! This forum is to help eachother out. Its not some secret society, as you put it. There are plenty of people here on that will help you out. Don't let a few spoiled apples mess up the idealogy of this forum. Hasta la proxima!!

Right on!

Abakua, you and all the pros on this site, reflect the best spirt of the drumming brotherhood. Great series on the guiro! Question: Do you need a particular type of gourd? Reason I ask is local market here (northeast US) has variety of autumn season decorative gourds for sale-- some as large as yours, though shaped a bit differently...Do you think they would work?[B]

Thanks again for the positive comments guys.

Congatick -
Hmmmm.. not too sure on type/species of gourds.. the shape of the gourd determines whether it will be best suited to guiro or chekere.. Ive seen natural gourd guiro's in many shapes and forms, I will post up some pics of a guiro I picked up in Sth America a few years back.
I prefer the gourd shaped like mine for guiro making. But if you find a gourd you like, and its a different shape and are feeling crafty, then go for it! Why the fark not!!! :D
My seeds came from a family of previous large gourds, since then my gourds have produced many many seeds, which I now will plant for future crops. Its daddy was a big gourd, daddy's daddy was a big gourd, its daddy's daddy's daddy was a big gourd... hehehe

Now.. My guiros are finished, all sealed and dried.
They will debut at this massive gig we have this coming weekend, the Bacardi Latino Fiesta festival here in Sydney, 5000-6000 people crowds each year. I will get some pics and post them up next week.

Below are some pics I took today. Some of you may notice the gourd on the left has had the neck cut closer to the pattern, this was done yesterday as I noticed a small crack appearing at the top of the gourd, to prevent it from spreading and geting worse, I chose to cut the gourds neck further down. Still sounds fantastic though.

Like I said in my previous post, here are a few pics of a guiro I have which I picked up in Sth America a few years back, as you can see, its a different shape to my big guiro's I made, but this one is only used for decorative purposes.
By the way, thats no paint you see, there is no paint at all on the gourd. All the markings/drawing is done by scraping/scratching into the gourd and the black sections are done by lightly burning the gourd.
Enjoy.

Dry the gourd thoroughly with a towel.
(note, pic taken while gourd was still wet)

Next.....

You will need to decide where to cut the neck of the gourd to have the opening of the guiro.
Once you have penciled in where abouts you would like the mouth of the guiro, cut higher than the line so you can sand down to the correct line later on.
Here are some of the tools you will require/tools I used.

heeeeyyyy, Abakua, I´m really impressed by seein´one of those Quilmes cans over there...maybe a little aché to the gods in those gourds, hmm? Where you in Argentine at that time? Con el latir de los cueros, el maja...
