Hi Guys,
Hadnt got the time to read all the posts fully.I feel we should leave religion out of this forum.Unless we are talking about candomble or santeria etc. Some thing that is directly related to drumming in some way.Religions discussions in this forum are misplaced and will only cause trouble.Believe me im Irish and we are experts at fighting over Religion.
cheers.Niall.

Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and in a wealth of blessings!

I wish to bring up a point about what has happened in this thread which should not be taken out of context! It appears that brother Bataboom, Pidoca, and myself played the major roles in this "Debate".
I call it a debate because that's what it was, mainly brother Bataboom and myself, shared our views on this topic in what was intended to be a discussion. I have nothing but love and respect for you brother Bataboom and the rest on this forum.

The fact still remains however that it was, for the most part, just us two who seemd to debate this, and yet it was left unresolved. If any others on this forum would like to have this thread to share input, experiences, revelations, please let it be known. It was not my intent to "censor" any topic, and it appears that my viewpoints may have come across in that manner. I did not mean for that to happen.

Respect, Love, Compassion!
Onile!

Honorible juster onile your a good guy really, Im with him on this I agree if anyone further has anything they want to discuss go right ahead. I on the other hand learned from this thread and I will refrain from anymore input on the matter of this topic because I take it sensitivly and I get my draws in a bunch if I dont agree. Which turns it into a debate like what just happened above. So go right ahead with the topic in good health :-)

Gentlemen ... and I mean that!

Matters of spirituality are so difficult to discuss without emotions running high - even though sometimes
we are only describing two sides of the same coin.

When truths are held to be absolute ... there is no room for challenge. But the world is round, not flat,
as we used to hold as absolute truth. :;):

On the topic, though, I would like to add that my first ever percussion debut was in a church.
I was five years old and my father and I sang a duet. "The Virgin Mary had a Baby Boy" was
the song - my dad on his 4-string tenor guitar and me on bongos. Many other musical memories followed.

So ... regardless of the changes in my personal belief systems ... the church was at least one of many
sources of musical experience along the way!

Peace, my drum brothers!

I'm a Christian percussionist. My hands and drums really connect me to the worship. My heart goal is to help others connect too. Worship facilitator, if you will.

Gday all.

thank you for your honest input.

If I may; the church can be a wonderful place for people to have their first musical (percussion) experience. i understand also that many people have been hurt by the church, or rather individuals within the church. Especially in regards to music. this saddens me.

Music is such a powerful medium that it would only make sense that we may get hurt when our heart is being worn on our sleve.

If the premise is that God (Insert our own idiom) created music; what was created first melody or rhythm?[B]

Dear Friends,
Please keep in mind that ANY church, mosque, synagouge, hountfor, terreiro, temple, pow wow, bembe, or really ANY religious organization is composed entirely of HUMAN BEINGS. Because they all obstensibly attempt to seek and communicate with GOD, they all have GOOD intentions. However, as in any HUMAN organization or endeavor, there may be those who have a NEGATIVE orientation. I prefer to focus on the GOOD, and that describes the MAJORITY of SPIRITUAL folks! Those who pervert their spirituality with hateful thoughts or acts have ABSOLUTELY missed the point!!!
Now I DO think it IS important to have some kind of SPIRITUALITY, and I hope that ALL others will find this, too. However, I think it is BAD to IMPOSE your spiritual beliefs on others, and I will NEVER do this. If you are concerned for your fellow HUMANS, please HELP them when they are in need and always PRAY for them. That IS enough, GOD will do the rest. We are NOT in charge here, so judge NOT! It would be both foolish and arrogant to think like that. Gotta little Jesus thing going on? GREAT!!! Chanting to Buddha? Well right on!!! Drumming for Chango? Oh, yeah!!! Remember, the creator has a master plan, peace and happiness for EVERYONE. So let's drum on!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Saludos,

Berimbau

Brothers I have to admit to possessing absolutley no spiritual inclinations whatsoever.. I am totally atheist.. This does not however detract from my connections with the ancient rhythms and feelings and emotions of our great ancestors..

Peace throughout... :)

certainly understandible, we all have some sort of connections in drumming, past experiances, and examples that we can look back to and farward upon.

fellow drumming brothers, it has been great to read all of your comments. after the initial shaky start, I cant help but see the common thread of unity, understanding, love and spirituality by all who have posted on this thread. :)

We all live in different parts of the world, are along different paths, different journeys; but in understanding each others similarities and differences we are making our world a better place.

I guess we call it " CONGA PLACE LOVIN"

I think it's great to hear that congas are making it onto worship teams at churches all over the world. Like other instruments that have taken awhile to make it into churches ( guitars, keyboards, etc) the congas add to the experience and I feel create a very organic vibe to music that is moving further and further away from acoustic.

It should be OK for people to express how they worship using the drums, this is a great topic.

I recently experimented with an 8 inch darbuka (turkish, not egyptian), and a 14 inch remo djembe played together with acoustic guitar. I held the darbuka as usual, while seated with the djembe between my knees and strapped to allow it to tilt off the floor. The combination sounds great with the darbuka tuned to the appropriate chord root, or third, or fifth. Careful planning of the songs helps. You can revert to finger snapping and slaps when the tuning is wrong, or just quicly retune. The djembe gives great bottom end reinforcement, and the darbuka..well, it speaks for itself. The patterns you can do are numerous, even with the left hand holding the darbuka. I like the unplugged sound too, Mike. I understand the need for all of it in a worship setting, though. Congas rule in worship! They work with all of it, if we try hard enough. Very few songs I don't want to play...mostly original versions of old hymns. Then I just sing..it's all worship.

God bless!

-Ron
