Alafia Abures!
May you all be well and in an abundance of blessings!

Now, this comment/question doesn't have anything to do with drummin' per say, but just around the time spiritual gatherings started gettin' noticed here in the states, probably more so in the South region.

Long before the spiritual gatherings became enmeshed with instruments (organ, piano, guitar, etc), there used to be those that would have bastones (canes, or walking sticks), and they would tap out a rhythm (keeping time), while other members would play palma (clap with their hands). Now you've gotta understand, this was done in a beautiful syncopative manner, not just quarter notes, but clave and building it up from there. Adding to this cocophony of rhythm, they then added their voices, coro (chorus), and pregones (lead singer), all of this was done in praise/worship. The fact of the matter however, is that this was also how news was conveyed in the community as well. As some of us here in the states might know, this was really common right around the era of slavery and coming out of it.

There was a special report some years ago which I saw on cable, in which they had presented a couple of groups which had preserved this practice, and let me tell you, it was beautiful. Somehow, we have always found a way to offer praise and worship through song and music!

Now for the question part of my post, has anyone else out there seen this documentary, and if so what was the name of it? I don't remember exactly what it was called.

Many blessings!
Onile!

HI Online,

I have not seen that show but it sounds facinating. I am always interested in watching how different cultural groups worship and overcome adversity to keep their heritage intact.

Has anyone read the book "worship his majesty" by Jack Hayford. I have found it really inspiring. It has cause a paradigm shift in me.

worship his majesty

Alafia Abure Onile!

Sounds like you are describing "stepping". We had a group at ISU that performed this style with canes.

Check out this link and let me know if that's it or not. :)

Peace!

Great Save!
That is the jest of what I was describing in this report that I had seen, although it was a documentary of sorts, the article you refer to does a great job of capturing the essence of it!

PIDOCA

IF GOD CREATED MUSIC, HE WITHOUT A DOUBT TOOK THAT CREATIVE SEED AND PLANTED IT SOMEWHERE DEEP IN A PLACE COMMONLY KNOWN AS AFRICA.
AS FAR AS MELODY OR RHYTHM I WOULD HAVE TO SAY NEITHER ONE. TONES IS MY ANSWER! THE MELODY OF A VOICE IS BASED ON TONES, THE RHYTHM IN PERCUSSION IS BASED ON TONES, ANCIENT LANGUAGES ARE BASED ON TONES, REMEMBER CLOSE ENCOUNTERS? THAT'S RIGHT TONES!!!

I think the topic started was refering to people to testify about your call of playing percussion in your organization. "He typed christian"... but there are more groups here than christians, maybe a better topic would have been "Spiritual and or Organizational Percussionist come testify" how and who you play for.

I myself am a Christian percussionist, I play AT my church FOR God. Explaination of this is: Yes the people hear it and I play inside the building, but I play to as unto God as he uses my talent given by him that I have sharpened with his help to the congregation as a music ministry. Music is a very important part of the christian worship services and helps get peoples minds, hearts, and spirits in tune with the Lord, he actually works through the music ministry just as he works through the Pastors preaching, or the power of an alter call prayer meeting. So my service and calling is very important and Im blessed to be chosen to do so. Do I think im so wonderful to be doing such a thing? Nope Im thankful that I can be a part of the workings of the music ministry in any capacity.

I am currently having a blast learning other percussion things such as Latin Jazz rhythms outside of the christian playing realm... though I am bringing that taste and style into our groups after service instrumentals and practice sessions, its just really a blast and Im loving it. Im not locked on with a one track mind and im opened to other styles and flavors and the more I learn the more fun im having with drumming! It was my pastors Idea to get started on having a percussion set up along with the drummer to help flavor the music and I took the idea and ran with it, he loves the turn out, I love the experience, and the people love the sounds and the feeling it brings. Just the other night at musician practice the Pastors wife which is a singer as well she commented on my playing as the sounds being in a fancy restraunt. That really made me feel good that she appreciated it.

My own opinion would have to be that man created rhythm first (accidently) and melody much later, probably from these basic rhythms..

Before creation the Angels sang onto God ... weather they had congas or not the word doesnt say, but they did sing with music so I say the rhythms came later with man.

.....unless you subscribe to the "Big-Bang" theory, in which case "bang" being a percussive sound, would have IT being the first sound in creation. Hummmmmmm! :p :D

ANYTHING I CAN SHARE, PIDOCA.

THAT'S RIGHT HERMANO ONILE BUT IF IT WAS A BIG BANG, WHO HEARD IT? WHAT CREATION DID THEY COME FROM? HOW WERE THEY MOVING ABOUT AND LOGGING DOWN THIS CREATION? MANY QUESTIONS COULD BE ASKED.
HERE'S SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY, IF GOD SAID IN CREATION THAT THE GOLD IN ETHIOPIA WAS GOOD THAN WAS IT REALLY SEVEN DAYS? BECAUSE FOR GOLD TO BECOME GOLD TAKES THOUSANDS OF YEARS AND EVEN MORE. ON TOP OF THAT WHY DID HE CHOOSE TO WALK THE GARDEN IN THE COOL OF THE DAY AS GENESIS STATES? WAS THIS REALLY AN UNSEEN GOD OR WAS THIS ONE OF OUR GOOD ANCESTORS LIKE SHANGO AND OBATALA WHO ASK FOR OFFERINGS FROM THEIR CHILDREN THE WAY THAT CAIN AND ABEL HAD TO DO? SUAVE!!!

remember unsaved brothers, God created everything, you must believe in him to be saved if you dont, your lost and that explains ALL OF YOUR QUESTIONS. But the only bad part is this is a
"Christian percussion thread"

SO LETS KEEP IT THAT WAY, no one welcomed any of your questions
or smart antiGod remarks ........

If you have a question about creation or God, or Christianity, then start your
own topic that says "Im unlearned and need some understanding about where I came from"
and Im sure someone would be glad to help :p

But in the mean while us SAVED Brothers are trying to conduct a discussion about "CHRISTIAN" church organizational percussion playing for the only all powerful God, JESUS CHRIST!

p.s. there was no big bang or... santa clause sorry to break the news to you folks :-/
