ooooooooo im shakin ! big buka!
Just remember it started out as christian percussion discussion, thats ummmmmmmmm drumming.

It was others that made it a
religiously racial big deal.

But I agree as we have seen the mixture
gets to touchy, and this isnt the first time anyone
has seen this happen on a forum. Im all for keeping it
on the just drumming tip homes!

THIS IS A DRUMMING FORUM, DROP THE ATTITUDE AND THE RELIGIOUS DEBATE, IT SERVES NO POSITIVE PURPOSE ON THIS FORUM. IF YOU DO NOT LIKE IT, YOU ARE WELCOME TO LEAVE THE FORUM.

Im not asking you to kiss anything, but you are the only one continuing this discussion which has sadly turned bitter.
It is a sensitive topic which people will always see differently on due to beliefs and spirituality.

Not pointing my stick at anyone but you?
Guess you missed this post:

Ok folks, I am going to ask everyone to have a coke and a smile and chill the F*ck out.

Healthy debate is welcome on the forum, this kind of behaviour over the last few pages is not.

If it continues I will lock the thread and be asking for alterations in your posting or you will be banned from the forum.

This discussion is not welcome on this forum be it your opinion or not. As said, this is adrumming forum, not a religious one.
Our drumming unites us, not our faith or beliefs.

Lets leave politics and religion out of this forum for the greater good of every user.

Respect to all.

I grew up hearing the old saying that it's not polite to discuss religion or politics in public. At this point in my life I can see the wisdom in that thinking. Granted, it's not easy for me to follow this wisdom in a drum forum, when I live in the US and play RELIGIOUS drums from CUBA! :D Religion or politics are always on the periphery at the very least. It's obvious that religion or politics can provoke colleagues who would ordinarily get along, to descend into bitter arguments. When I joined the Yahoo batadrums forum, that group was in the midst of a bitter theological dispute. That was a different group of people, but it had a similar flavor to the contentions within this thread. Hey, that advice I grew up hearing may not be so bad.

As for the rhythm vs tone controversy; it's a non-issue. They are one of the same! Three against two is the foundation of African-based rhythm as well as the ratio which generates the perfect fifth. Three against four generates the perfect fourth. If you speed up these cross-rhythms, the rhythm will eventually no longer be percievable, but you will hear tone. You will hear the harmony upon which European Classical music is founded. You can probably conduct this experiment on a drum machine or computer.

The sequence of strokes and rests comprising the standard (6/8) bell pattern is the same sequence as the major scale. etc.. etc..

Both the African rhythmic principles and the European harmonic principles are built upon the Pythagorean theorems, which are really just the fundamnetal patterns found in nature. Bronowski addressed the Pythagorean theorems in his book "The Ascent of Man", in the chapter called The Music of the Spheres: "These symmetries are imposed on them by the nature of the space we live in; the three dimensions, the flatness within which we live and no assembly of atoms can break that crucial law of nature. They could not have any but the symmetries we have shown here. That is, rotation through twice, four times, three times or six times, but not more and not five. You cannot make an assembly of atoms to make triangles which fit space five at a time."

The physics of tone and the structure of African rhythm are based on triple/duple ratios. The triple and duple also have universal spiritual significance. The duple represents the duality of the physical life, while the triple represents the transcendence of the spirit. Joseph Campbell said "Whenever one moves out of the transcendent one comes into a field of opposites".

But I digress :D

I'm glad there's a Congaplace.com Admin policing this forum.

It's very difficult to separate what you believe from what you do...especially if what you believe makes you dependent and submissive to the creator. Then passion can, and often does, take over. Passion often turns the best intentions into harsh realities that diverge wildly from the original idea. It happens on a motorcycle forum I frequent, too. The natural course of the discussion always brings it back around to friendly "agree to disagree" posts and everyone goes on their merry way, with a little more information on each other. They have a place called "the soap box" forum, where this is expected and condoned..gets pretty interesting!

It seems as though religion and drumming are pretty closely tied, so maybe a forum about that would help. We could all learn alot, I'm sure. Anybody could take it or leave it, and with a few rules of engagement it can work out nicely. Simply requiring everybody with a "religious" belief to leave it at home seems less desirable to me. The other way can help us grow as friends, I believe.

Just a thought. I realize there's a forum for suggestions, but everybody is already here, and very attentive, so I figured I'd do it here.

God bless!

I've thought for sometime now that the element of anonymity can contribute to a forum's descent into "flame-wars". If we were all sitting around a table, we might be a bit more careful with our words.

That's agood point, David. That's a great way to approach posting for me. Pretend you can see the faces in the room with you. I hate it when I see someones eyes showing that I inflicted a wound with my tongue. Helps keep me from doing it.

With all respect....

I find it sad that administrators on this site are asking people to stop this discussion yet they themselves have mentioned religious beliefs (other than Christianity) in many different threads. In fact some of their very screenames are religious terms....funny.

It appears like in life, even Internent forums can be a very close-minded and bigoted place.
