I've heard that you shoul dress your heads periodically with manteca or other oils. Is manteca the same as like Armour lard that you can buy in a small box at the grocery store or is it something special that you have to really look for? What exactly is it?

Most people are actually referring to manteca de corojo, better known as red palm oil. I would suggest using this, or some shea butter. What actually works well is to rub some on your hands when you play or practice, it will them be absorbed by the drums and keep your hands from drying out.

Nsala Malecum y Alafia Abures!
I hope that you are all well and in an abundance of blessings!

Abure Mangorockfish!
Here is a site where you can purchase some "epo" (manteca de corojo/palm oil) online!
http://lucumi.com/cfshop/searchall2wild.cfm

I use it, as Abure Pcastag suggested, on my hands when I practice and play out! Depending on where you are located, you might be able to find a "botanica" that carries it.

Many blessings!

Hi Rocky,
I can send you some with the skins..
It's not the red palm oil used in cooking.
Easier to get here in NYC. Don't use
too much of it.

Well, Palm/Oil used to be part of the african/Trade,which were saling to the European for the lubrication of machines. There is not ned to say color, yes Palm Oil since some of it could have a different chromatic features,I would go to african places, some time the botanicas are not saling the real product
