YEA YEA YEA Brent Lewis ..we used to hang..memory getting a bit slow here...yea he used Boo Bams and tuned congas and had that big ass stage he made for himself....No it wasn't "Peanuts" Taylor who I met in the Bahamas at his Nightclub called "Peanuts".....the brother that played with Darin was tall and was reading charts while he was playing....Im gonna be 58 this year and still lug my own shit , but the carrying of over 100 instruments went out in the late 7o's for me.....Now I get Cartage from Pearl.... Abakua, I told you not to go in my house when I am not there,LOL Well that's what it used to look like, now some of those congas are all over; thanks to ebay. At home I mess around with 5, at most gigs with 3, plus a Djembe or a tambor alegre, caja, surdo, depends what drum I want to feature that night, besides the congas, timbales. But its great when the congas are already there, you just hope they have good skins on.

I'm actually from New york, but I can definitely relate! That motto isn't just made up for no reason...these folks out here definitely want the visual proof if they can get it.

I have rearranged the setup and the mikes. I took Abakua's advice on the mike placement...not sure if the setup got more traditional or not. It is more compact, though. Basically put the requinto directly in front of me, quinto left, 12 inch tumba right, then the same on the front row with the bigger drums. I can still reach them all, since the two in the back are quite a bit rearward of where I'd put them in a three drum setup.

Having the requinto in front of me all the time makes the front row closer for easy reach, and lets me snap and crackle and pop a little more often...I like it. Still can do six drum patterns..maybe even a little easier...hard to tell, but I like the compactness of this setup a little better for sure. SO, left to right...rear row is 11 inch, 10 inch, 12 inch...front row is 11 3/4, 11, and 12 1/2. Very easy to get melidic patterns on five, without too much extra effort...I'm used to three, and there seems to be some sort of correlation there, might be the setup. Six takes some real loose arms if it's a fill pattern (eehah!), but just playing melodically within the song is pretty easy...and very cool. It's almost like having a funny sounding piano to play along with the guitarists. I really like the vartiations of rolls I have now for song endings and impact fill areas. I also really like having the requinto right there. Really never used the 10 inch drum tuned this high until I got the new set. Opens up a new dimension, and cuts better in an electic mix too. I will continue to experiment with this...keep those tips coming...I'll try anything that isn't dangerous! On the drums that is...probably shouldn't give me any ideas about my motorcycle (mad wife sometimes already).
Looks like I need to get the pledge out and clean off some finger smudges...confounded flash gives everything away.
