Bauer and LP Giovanni Seriese conga - compare bauer and LP Giovanni Seriese

Two weeks ago a guy had 3 and was practicing for a domingo de rumba show at La Pena. The drums sound awesome I didnt get a chance to play because they were in the middle of practice but I almost but a set. Instead I found a great deal on some gon bops nearly new that compleates my set.

What's up guys!! As everyone knows on this forum I swear by MATADORS. The sound is awesome and very it's inexpensive. Much more cheaper than the Giovanni. I agree with you BongoBoy the hardwear is not a pretty sight and that is one of the reasons I didn't purchase them.

I got a chance to play those bauers this past sunday and they sound good nice warm sound very nicely made, and look good. the price is not bad also. There are some on ebay a set of three, the only thing that caught my eye is the hardware on the tumba is like what comes with gon bops. Not the original hardware! I emailed Bauer and they said they don't seel hardware to there drums. So I wonder what happened to the hardware.

I saw the 2 sets on ebay last week. They did not sell, cause the reserve was not met. One of the sets the owner said his friend had borrowed them and tightened the head to hard and it cause a fracture. The owner said that it didn't hurt the drums, they were fine. Is that possible? I know it is hard to repair fiberglass, but it is done and same with a wooden chair. But a Conga? that can't be good. If the crack is between staves would that be a 'minor' repair? I am curious. Anyone had that happen?

Of course, I like the Giovanni's sound but I have actually played Classics and Gon Bops in a lesson and they sounded just as good. So, many choices, so little funds. What about the older LP's, I been checking out ebay and they keep having some older LP's, like the Patato? Or Caliente? the Limited edition 35yr anniversary Lp's?

JC, are the Pearl bottom line wood congas as good as Matadors? I know the Elites are better, but I saw some advertised for $215 in Interstate Music catalog I just got, and thought that might be too good to be true?

Hey, Guys,
Speaking of Giovanni's, does it make sense to buy a Galaxy requinto and the 11 3/4 size only? (instead of going with the two 11 3/4 and 12 1/2 congas). I am trying to keep the sizes down.

I would be playing with the church worship team usually inside and don't need too big of a sound, but want qualiry sound.

regarding "galaxies": One of my teachers had them and I brought my classics to a session. We compared them and in my opinion (and in my teachers also), the sound of the classics is much warmer because of the rounder shape (more resonance). Well, its always the question what kind of sound you prefer, but from my point of view, I wouldn't spend the money for galaxies!

i agree with the galaxy. i have a pair with awsome sound,won't change them for anything. just waiting to upgrade the with another galaxy conga, since i prefer it ,rather than the quinto, also i will upgrade heads with mule, when i get the chance. just the hardware what i don't agree with much. love the sound very crisp slap, warm open tone with awsome resonance, and so on. ache to all!! yes!! franc

I have played the bauer congas on and off for years.Brazilian percussionist dudu tucci endorses these and uses them for all his study classes.The best thing about them for me is the consistancy of the heads.I have never seen bad heads on bauer drums.As opposed to lp which i find really hit and miss.The bauer drums are also good value for money.The quintos are to small in my opinion but sound fab

I agree with you about the heads, I have put Bauer heads on my LP Classics and they sound great.

Hey try checking out a set of congas made by ISLA Percussions. They are based in So. California. I purchased a set of 3 (quinto,conga,tumba) last year. I am extremely happy with my purchase. These drums are similar to the original Gon Bop or Junior Tirado congas that were made in the 1970's. Their prices are really competive. I would never buy anything else but ISLA. The drums are handmade in the USA. The staves or shell of the drum are cut to the shape, (not steam bent) which maintains the structural integrity of the wood. Also, the hardware are all made of stainless steel. R u tired of seeing chipped chrome or paint on your drums? Stainless steel solves that problem. In my opinion these drums will last several generations and then some. The best quality of these drums is the tone that they produce. Just listen to some recordings of the Cuban rumba groups in the 1960's era and that is exactly what you get.
