tips on playing in heat and humidity

I'm playing in an outdoor festival in Dallas and it will be very hot and humid. I play LP classic wood congas with natural skins, and I'm concerned I'll have a lot of adjusting/retuning to do during the show. Also, should I use a little baby powder on my hands to keep them (and the skins) dryer? I'm used to playing indoors, any advice would be appreciated.

Yes use baby powder on the heads of the drums, it will keep them dry from the humidity...."JC" Johnny Conga...

I'm thinking of investing in fiberglass congas with synthetic skins for outdoor use.

Hola Huero,

This is when synthetic heads become handy. Better projection, no worries about weather conditions messing around with your drums tuning etc. Right now, you don't need to invest on fiberglass drums unless you really want to invest on some. Just get some synthetic heads and mount them on your LP Classics. I do that all the time, switching from traditional animal skins to synthetics depending on the gig. Another thing to take in consideration make sure you are properly miked. I know you are concern about your drums sounding the best as possible we all do, but don't forget about yourself my friend. Drink plenty of water and fluids to keep you hydrated, if you don't feel good and don't take care of yourself, you can have the best sounding drums in the world and still sound bad.

PD Which festival and with who are you playing?

I think I'll get the synthetic skins and put them on the Classics, although I'm probably going to invest in some LP Galaxy Congas in the near future. The festival is in a town called Grapevine about halfway between Dallas and Ft Worth (near Irving) called the Grapevine Main Street Days Festival. We start at 4:30 today (the hottest part of the day!) I'll post some pix in the next few days. I'm starting to drink water already, (I'll save the beer till after the show)

I had previously play that same festival with Venezuelan harpist Carlos Guedes.

I use a rubber hammer and I pound on the rim of the drums to adjust the pitch while playing;

It is fast, cheap safe and reliable
