I believe that there are four things that give gon bops their unique sound:

Shape -- The drums have a characterisically cuban shape
Materials -- Good wood and, on the older models, good hardware
Craftsmanship -- again on the models that were created before gon bops fell on hard times
Heads -- Cow hide and mule heads are far superior to water buffalo.

I got my conga and tumba new in the late '70's (serial #'s has a 76 in them) ... they are not GonBop's top of the line - IC3000 and IT3000.

I like their tone ... not as crisp as the LP Classics, but I guess that would be the difference in the heads.

The conga is slightly out of round, and I had to retighten the metal bands on both drums. There are slight splits in the staves on both drums.

I got mine in the early 80's and bought the top of the line with international hardware. They sound great I just wish I would have bought a whole set instead of just two. I also wish I would have dedicated more time to playing but hey it's here and now.
