Welcome to the forum Ian, to answer you questions.
1. An advantage is that you can choose what type of skin you would like on your drum, most commercial heads now days are water buffalo, and pre-treated with chemicals, that shorten the life of the head.
2. If you treat your drum head correctly and mantain it you shouldn't have to change it. In some cases, drummers do not detune the drum after playing, and all they do is stretch and stretch, and before you know it; the head has no life and at time it rips.
3. You change conga heads when you don't like the sound of the head it came with, when you want to try other heads( thicker , thinner)
