Guys,
Easy, easy.
Were grown ups here, lets keep it that way.
How can a discussion about keeping people off your tubs deteriorate into name calling.
Call me old fashioned, but that is just the way wars start.

The "No, you cannot play my drums." covers were a homemade idea after my first "bongo" bar pirate wanrted to make an issue out of playing my tubs during a break.

Got me a an old white bedspread. Cut it to a size and shape large enough to cover all of my tubs, and with a bigass laundry marker pen, carefully penned the answer to the question we always seem to get when someone at the bar feels the rhythm coming on after a few drinks.

Of course, a more finished look can be accomplished in other ways...and I probably should have softened the message a bit making a bit less confrontive, something like: "No, I'd rather you didn't play my drums." But you get the idea, And so do they.

Onile,

Those are far more classy looking than my raggedy cover, and I bet they keep "hands off" without the words.

Nice hats!! And I like the idea of the cover with the answer printed on it. Another problem is people leaning or trying to sit on the congas. I once had a band member leaning on my conga while talking to another band member. My congas were in stand up stands (I have changed to traditional seated playing since). Anyway, I told him "...if you want to lean, buy a kickstand". He got the point.

People under the influence are nutz man!! I also play harmonica and have had to stop people from trying to play my harps. Can you imagine!! :O I told them that would be like sharing a toothbrush

Play on family!

It really annoys me when people will walk by and bang on one of my drums a couple times and keep going like it's nothing. I think that people are really drawn to percussion and hand drumming but still. I have had to tell a few people to knock it off and it's not fun. At a house party one time this drunk was beating the hell out of my tumba. I had to put a stop to that very quickly! Now I stand in front of my congas and greet people before they even get to my gear. They think I am being friendly and it keeps folks away from the goods.

Of course though in my home I will invite guests to have a little go on the tumbadoras, it is a primal urge in men & women.. Everybody wants to play and some get serious and want me to show them some technique..

I'm not precious about them, anyone can have pop if they ask...

Until I bore them to death.. :D

Ahhhhh... I get it. The old overwhelm-them-with-much-more-than-they-want-to-know routiine. If a drunk would be susceptible to it, I'd have a go at this technique.

When somebody tries to play your instrument, it's harcore, but more advanced level is when somebody wants to play the whole gig with you
In my percussions bands it happened many times. Sometimes these people even bring their own instrument (usualy some "gift shop" djembe or such).

I wouldn't mind a song or two if the person was good musician, but 99.9% of good musicians don't have need to show off in this way..

Hey now that's bringin back some memories!
Reminds me of this guy I used to sometimes see at gigs. He played a little and was studying congas for a year or so. Fortunately it was not on my gig, but he would literally just walk uninvited on to their stage and grab a drum or shaker, whatever was to hand and start playing.
He couldn't even play well but just thought it was his right to get up there.
Not on my gig buddy!

I had a guy we called 'cherry pie', 'cause he always brought some small frame drum/tamborim type thing that sounded like he was hitting a pie pan. ???
I specifically reconfigured the way I set up for certain gigs to keep the "trolls" away from my tubs. When I'm playing kit and congas I only bring one seat and keep my setup tight. With just congas, I try to set up so someone has to work their way past the rest of the band to get to me. Those horn players can get feisty!!

If I want you to play, I'll ask you. :D

Hola Onile,

Thanks a lot for sharing the website. It's a big help for me.

I'm looking into buying those head covers. And those conga stands are interesting: simple, folding-design and capable of both standing and seated playing. They look very similar in design to the LP Super Conga Stands, but they're just about 30% of the cost of the LPs!

Take care my brudda,
