Hey everyone,
Thanks for coming out! It was good to put some faces with some online names, check out some great drums, and lay down some real nice grooves (Guaguanco, Columbia, Palo, Bembe, Comparsa, Mozambique, Iyesa, Abakua, Bomba, etc.). We talked about doing a drum-circle groove in honor of CB member congamyk, but never got around to it, and we didn't have any djembes besides.
There was only one crazy homeless lady! So that was good, too.
Nothing like playing congas and/or talking about congas/drumming for 4 hours. Three of us are going up to Humboldt next week for the Cuban Drum and Dance workshops for the week. We're all really looking forward to that.
It was a nice spot, too, under a couple of big oak trees, with a bbq right there - sorry about the rubber fish, David!
Afterwards a lot of us went over to La Pena (a great latino arts center in Berkeley) to check out the heavyweights laying it down at the bi-monthy rumba: Yaya Maldonado, Trevino Leon, Pili, Chris "Flaco" Walker, Javier Navarrete, etc. - Sandy Perez was supposed to be there but couldn't make it. We are truly blessed in the San Francisco Bay Area to have such a talented group of percussionists living here.
As for drums, David (windhorse) brought a real sweet set of 3 mahogany Sols out from Colorado, Tony (blango) brought a cedar "Chino" that he recently got from Florida and renovated - fantastic drum! - and an old oak GB quinto, and I brought my King Congas, my old former-tackhead yellow drum with the funky hardware, and a 50s Havana quinto that I renovated. It was real nice for all of us to play some great drums you don't see every day.
My camera decided not to work, so no pics from me, sorry.
Until next time ...
Keep hitting those drums!
~james
