Conga/Bongo Head Treatment

Does anyone know of any treatment, such as a type of liquid or oil that is used to keep conga/bongo heads from wearing out and becoming too dry and cracking/tearing? I would like to preserve the heads I have and am wondering the best way to do so as I really dont want to buy new ones.Thanks in advance for all replies.

Hi Radman,
I've seen some stores using hand lotion on their skin.
If you have a herbal store around you, you can get brasil-nut oil (manteca de corojo.... did I spell it right?) which is actually more butterlike and is commonly used in cuba to maintain drum heads.

Get some LARD...manteca....tune ur bongos down to a thud..put a thin coat using finger tips on the head in a circular motion all over the head and sides. then leave it in the sun for about 2 hours,till it's melted into the head. then wait 24 hours minimum before u tune them up. That is really interesting about using lemon oil. It sounds like it would be lighter than using the more traditional Manteca de corojo or shea butter. Where do you find this quality lemon oil? Is it perhaps used for furniture, normally?

Thanks, Bro! I've been using shea butter, but this is the 1st time I've heard of lemon oil. Isn't it acidic and, therefore, may actually be bad for the drumheads?
