LP Performers Series Congas? - What do you know? Are they any good?

I currently have a set (conga & tumba) of Matadors and have wanted to add another drum to my set for some time. I stumbled upon the Guitar Center's deal for the LP Performers Series Congas, "buy two get one free" which would not cost much more than purchasing one single drum (3 drums for $499.00 vs. 1 drum $300.00).

The specs on the head size for the performer seires congas are the same as the Matadors I currently have, but when I went to check them out my Matadors seem to have a wider body than the Performer Series. I don't know if that has any relevance.

Does anyone have any experience with these congas? If I purchase them I plan to use them for live gigs.

These could well be Aspires in disguise. Have you checked the height? Apires 28", Matadors 30". In any case a quick search on line show these to be low end beginner drums.

they are full size drums with weak hardware. if you want to add a 11" performer, be prepared to change the tuning lugs. for 11 3/4 and 12 1/2 maybe its ok, cause there are 6 lugs instead of 5 to hold the skin. depends on the skin and the tension you want.
the shells are ok. two ply siam oak/rubberwood same as classics.

I bought LP Performer congas for my school ensemble. They are quite OK for beginners. Zwar is right about the hardware, but i t could be worse. Of course I wanted better drums, ´cause also pupils deserve decent instruments, but unfortunately my school´s budget was not high enough.
But I think they are a good compromise, an additional three drums for 600€. All other school congas are Meinl Marathon Classics, also very nice, not only for educational purposes.

To anybody else, I would recommend Matador congas - they are fantastic and unsurpassed as regards their cost effectiveness.

Hello Drummers

I have been playing on the set (3 drums) Performer Series for about 2 years now. They are better than the Aspire Series. What was said about the hardware is true but they are a good beginner set with a great price. I tried some of the Skin conditioning tricks that JC (Johnny Conga) told me about and I must say that when they are broken in they sound good.

I got a set of three about 3.5 years ago. I got Isaac to put some mules on them, and they sounded great. It's a good deal for a first set, but be prepared to change the heads. The hardware is a bit light, but never caused me any problems. The shape of the drums is different than Matadors...smaller belly. I have since moved on to Classics for gigs, but I still use the Performers for practice.
