I played a hand drumming workshop gig the other day where the facilitator told everyone coming to learn that they had to smile while drumming. That was his main rule. That rule in itself seemed to evoke a lot of smiles :D -and yes everyone had a happy look on their faces while we were teaching them. They were just having a good time playing a rhythm together and making music. When i feel prepared for a gig I tend to smile more and just enjoy myself...if its a gig where I'm filling in or playing something that I'm not 100% comfortable with, I tend to get really focused, pick a spot to stare at and then the toungue comes out and starts doing its own thing. :p People always lagh at my faces!

I was wondering when you would get on this forum

Geordie, are you the Geordie who has played with Super Sonic Samba School on occasion (and let us stay in his home)? I am Brian from San Diego.

Wow another guy with my weird name! Sadly, I do not belong to the Super Sonic Samba School (coolest name ever!).
.............but if you make it up to SF you may end up staying at my home. :D

Hate to bring up this old topic again but, this subject is addressed in a satirical way buy Eddie Harris in a video congamyk posted in the "straight ahead jazz tread".(Eddie Harris/Les McCann - "Compared to What")
Some thought this subject to be rather silly to even discuss, but obviously it is something that has some importance in this culture. Smiling does not have the same importance in all cultures. I believe that is what he was trying to convey in that performance. It takes place in the second half of the video. Check it out. Its a great performance. ( the music ) If you care to respond to the topic of smiling, do it here and to the music itself, in the "straight ahead jazz tread".

guilty!
I'm a smiler, not on purpose, just happens. I think players should just do what they are most comfortable with. I think it would be worse to smile if you don't mean it...or grimace if you're not really trying that hard, then you're just "acting"

Not to beat a dead horse but, IMO, it's a personal thing.

So, my humble recommendation is: Be yourself.

Speaking only for myself, music is communication with others using sound and notes and a big part of that communication is the musician's body language. I can't help that I often convey to others a wide range of emotions: from smiling, even laughter, to showing intensity and concentration.

It's nothing new to say that music is an extremely powerful communication tool where we can actually take our audience along for an emotional roller coaster ride! :D

Try as I might I'm usually not smiling when I'm playing, I'm usually too intense about the music. If I smile it might only be in a cruisy part of the song.

I think Eddie Harris says it best (see YouTube vid 'Compared to What') - "Many of you probably think I'm not happy because Im not smiling. Im not smiling because Im thinking about the music. Im listening and I'm a very intense person listening to the music. But if you want me to smile, I will now smile. (smiles) Because we are now finished and I don't have to think about the music anymore, so I can laugh and enjoy myself."

ciao!
