Have anyone heard about Bauer Percussion congas?
I found them at http://www.sambapercussion.de/
Price looks quite reasonable if those are good drums.

Any expierence/recomendations?

several board members use them. I've never played a set, or even seen one, but everything I've heard about them has been good.

I have owned three since september and I think they are absolutely brilliant. Here in Brazil I got two tumbas and a conga for about $1000 brand new with gig bags.
They are very well made, good wood , good skins, and very strong hardware. THey also have a lovely classic shape.
But best of all is the sound. Very rounded and well defined open tones which makes for very melodic playing. The other tones are aslo well balanced with crisp slaps on all drums even tuned low and fat bass tones.

I highly recommend them. Bauer congas used to be raul, their classic design hasn't changed for over 20 years. The company itself is based in Sao Paulo and is famously unreliable, but how much after sale care do you need on a good pair of congas?

For the money they are a fabulous deal. As you can see from my for sale post I am not taking my Palladiums to Brail, no need.

cheers

ho

bauers are good ones. i played the classic line, the vintage and the planet. would not recommend planet, but the others are real pro tubes. hardware looks weak, but believe me it is not. they use very fine material. they are priced about 400€ (germany) one. once broken in they offer very warm and round sound.

I've got Bauer Lites. I'm pretty happy with them. This model is no longer made, however, at least for now.

I had a friend that has some Bauer congas and he really liked them. I played them once and thought they sounded really good. I have played some other Bauer instruments in a samba group I play in and I have found their quality to be excellent.

This is what I get from Germain dealer of Bauer:

"Drum head measure is 11" for the conga and 113/4" for Tumba. Quinto is 9 3/4" and Supertumba is 12 1/2" "

Can you comment this ? Seems to be like LP Aspire measurements, or other entance level instruments ...

Actually LP have the same sizes, only they call 11" quinto, 11,75" conga and 12,5" tumba!

My only experience of Bauer is playing some in a shop, but I bought some Bauer skins for my LP Classics and they are an improvement over the standard LP skins, if you like a nice dry sound. They have been on the road and work very well.
I had to go to the supplier and try them on first as they vary, and do a little 're engineering' of the skins to make them fit, ie soak the flat and curve only to fit the LP tub, but IMHO it was worth it.

These measurements are incorrect, as I read them. My Bauers are

quinto: 11"
conga: 11 3/4"
tumba: 12 1/2"

These are, as korman wrote, the same as for LPs.

Does anyone have new Bauer congas, made after January 2007? Any comments on the sound, weight? I read on the Bauer's website that starting February 2007 their congas and bongos will be made from brasilian cedar wood.

I could not find direct comparison of cedar with rubberwood, which is the most popular conga wood nowadays, but from what I googled on the internet, cedar wood is significantly less dense and strong than oak, but also is noted for it's retention of shape. So that may mean a cedar conga would be light and less likely to go out of round.
What wood were the Bauer's made from previously? So far there have been mostly good reviews about those drums, but I wonder, has that changed with the switch to cedar wood?

Hi,

the Bauer congas, at least the classic line is said to be made from brasilian cedro rosa. Cedro rosa is not cedar as you might undestand it. ( A kind of conifereous tree growing in arabian countries with well smelling wood.) Cedro rosa is a tree with leaves related to the species of mahagony. (my researches with google).
The Bauer congas have good reputation in Europe, a friend of mine owns some and if I had the money they wood be one of my first choices.

hmmmmm! i hate to throw another measurement in with the mix, but here goes. as measured with a strait edge, not a tape, my bauer lights come out at

10.75

11.50 -

12.50 -

- is as they are just a hair or so short; probably shrinkage.

these drums come with a comfort curve, heavy 1/8 thick side brackets that have a rubber cushion between them and the side of the drum, large interior side plates of 1/16 thick copper with a cusion between them and the drum, 30 inches tall, 15mm tuning rod nuts and the top 1/3 of the drum is fiberglassed inside. they are very light indeed, but sturdy and have a nice round deep voice. the skins are bleached cowhide/steer (?)

i will have a set of the classics next week, so i will compare the two.

there is no lack of performance in these drums as i see it; aside from playing with a loud band. they are the lightest of all the drums i have, even lighter than some fiberglass. a quaility made product; albeit not of the custom variety - but good none the less.
