My Mother is Colombian and she is going to Cali. Is it worth me having her pick me up a set of El Piernas bongos?

Vinnie yes it is. El Piernas is 1 of the better drum manufacturers out there, you get a heavy duty Bongó with top quality skins, top quality wood ,superior craftmanship ect ect. I also have friend in Cali right now with the compromise to bring me one. This is the address in Cali.

Carrera 17D Transversa 30 No. 30-31 Barrio Saavedra Galindo Cali Colombia.

I HAVE HAD 2 COLOMBIAN BONGOS FROM EL PIERNAS. I HAVE NOT BEEN DISAPOINTED, BUT SINCE YOU HAVE YOUR MOTHER IN COLOMBIA STOP BY CP BONGOS. THIS IS COLOMBIA PERCUSION BONGOS. HIS NAME IS ALTURO. THEY ARE A LOT BETTER THAT EL PIERNAS. GOOD LUCK WITH IT.

I have had 2 El Piernas bongos, a vintage one from the early 80's that now belongs to "Caballoballo" in this forum and a recent one about 2 yrs. old that I gave my son in law. There is a tremendous difference in sound projection coming from the vintage El Piernas (Caballo's) and the new one that my son in law has. The vintage Piernas is one of the best sounding bongos I've ever played, however, that's not the case with the new one and I have tried different heads and skins.
Tell your mom to ask for an older set, even if it's used. I guess Piernas is using new wood. The one Caballo has I think is Guayacan or Cahoba wood.
Saludos, Dario. :D

Dario gracias por la informacion. It may be a couple of month before they go dow there anyway. I will continue to ponder the El piernas and also some others I know the Gon Bops Cali is highly recommended.

Yes ,there is a difference between wood types in this case Ash & Mahogany, Ash made Moperc and I think the El Piernas is Mahogany. They do not have the same sound although they have about the same thickness skin on the Hembra .Believe me ,the sound of the Hembra is what makes me choose a Type of Bongó because the Macho providing a quality skin will alway sound crisp, the hembra should have a deep sound. Vinnie,GonBops are conical not cilindrical as El Piernas, thus the tone and sound projection is not the same.
