I read on the board to use lanolin or palm oil to help dry drum heads, but I have no idea what this stuff actually is. Say I walk into the local grocery or drugstore, what am I looking for? What brand?
"Lotion which contains lanolin" is too vague, what specific brand and type would you recommend? a picture of the bottle would be better :p

Is "oil of olay" from the CVS drugstore good? How about medical lanolin for mothers that was mentioned. What is palm oil? Please advise.

Palm tree oil (manteca de corojo) can be purchase on line. http://www.folkcuba.com/stores/st_botanica_detpage1n.asp?id=1271.

If the above address does not works, just type the product name in the search & select from the results. Also in any Latino neigborhood, look for a place call BOTANICA,they should have the palm tree oil(manteca de corojo ) cost about $3.00.

Shea butter is also very very good. Availabe at any health store or online. Get the stuff that says 100% Shea butter. There are several brands, just get the 100% stuff and you'll be fine.

BNB,yes that is the place. Down here in the Island of Enchatment you can find a botanica everywhere. Do some research, it is good for many things including been an antioxidant. How long before you get the Valje ?

I use 100% pure lanolin. You only have to use a tiny bit at a time since it is very concentrated and greasy. If you want to get the stuff that is 100%, you can do what I did. Go to any Longs Drugs, and go to the section that has products for breastfeeding women. I know this sounds crazy, but they use this stuff to heal the dryness they get when breastfeeding. Or you can ask the attendant in that section. The brand I have is called "Lansinoh". It is also used for dry feet therapy as well. On the web... you can go to http://www.drugstore.com
and type Lansioh in the search window. The original Gon Bops company recommended Lanolin for their heads so you know it is good. Trust me, you won't regret it.

Sorry about the typo. The product is called Lansinoh. It comes in a 2 oz tube that will last you forever, for about 9 or 10 dollars. Good luck.

Thanks everyone. I will stop by the local drugstore for a tube o' lanolin.

What method do you all recommend applying the lanolin? A little on a paper towel? By hand? How much should be applied and where on the drum head should it be applied? What happens if I put too much? Does it clean up easily?

I used lanilin on some bongos once, I really didn't like it, too thick and I found that it didn't really absorb well. I would really suggest using shea or manteca de corojo, red palm oil. they both really have the right consistancy and absorb in the head well. Some people just rub it on their hands before thay play and it absorbs into the heads.

Do not put too much on the head (Bongó Head ,remember we have 2) because you 'll get a very dull sound. I do it only once a year & let it dry naturaly or under the Sun.

Yeah the best way is to rub it into your hands before you play, then let the residual stuff get onto you drums, maybe rubbing it in a bit..

I've read others puting the skins in the sun when they put the oil/butter/lotion on to let it sink in.

Like others say, don't put too much.

ok2go....just remember that your first impulse is going to be to put too much on. So just put a small dab onto your finer tips and as you rub your finger tips together the lanolin turns nice and oily. You can do as others have mentioned, rubbing it onto your hands, playing the drums and also rub your hands onto your drumheads. Just a little at first, then later on you can decide if it was enough. Remember a 2oz tube should last you a long time. I know there are others who like using palm oil. You can always go that route if also if you don't like the lanolin. But I look at it this way...it's not going to break you, and you can chalk it up as more experience for you.
Funny story..........I was recently at a drum circle, and afterwards lots of people stayed around trying each others drums. I played this one guys drums and they were so oily I was looking to see if there was a place on his drum for a Dip stick. I got off that drum quick and wiped my hands with a rag. This guy overdid it to the point that the skins did not even sound good.
