Oh Dear I messed up !!!!!! - Dilema ?

Ok Guys at first I was not going to post this , but after thought I think it may aid any other first timers when it comes to mounting skins .
I fitted a mule to my 113/4 Conga .
I messed up by cutting to short and now about a 16th of the rim were the crown fits is exposed because the skin slipped under the crown when drying I have cranked the drum up and it sounds pretty ringy , Im guessing that its the contact point of the crown with the flesh hoop.only a half inch is in contact other than that the flesh hoop is covered.
Id post a pic but my camera is tits up ATM .
Im thinking of re-soaking it and fitting to my Quinto 11".
Im thinking if Im careful when trimming this time I may get away with it and order another skin From Issac JCR .

What do you guys think I should do ?
other option was to fitt to my bongos as Id have more to trim so to speak ???

Ok guys you can all call me a Banana but Its a learning curve not the end of the world . I was real pissed when I discovered this , just when I thought all was good too Doh ................. :p :p

That's an expensive learning curve, chief!

if it sounds bad now, when you tighten the skin more in the future it will sound worse. That is if the rest of the skin does'nt start slipping under the rim too.

3/4" is not a lot, probably is'nt enough skin left for you to grip and stuff to fit to the quinto, that just sounds like a nightmare waiting to happen to me.

I'd go for the bongo. Skin is probably too thick for the macho, so be careful with the hembra, I hope you have a regular 8 1/2" hembra and not one of those 9" ones..

I hope that you are well!

Obviously you aren't happy at the moment, however all is not lost!
Your idea of re-mounting the skin onto your quinto is the best way to save it.

Word of caution however: DO NOT CRANK THE TUNING RODS with a wrench so soon.
What I mean is re-soak the skin (8hrs. at best)
* Take the flesh hoop and place it as central as possible
* Take some string and begin over laying the flaps of skin so that the flesh hoop is totally covered, using the string to keep it in place (wrapping the string under and over.
* Place the crown onto the skin and place it on the quinto

Once you are able to place the tension rods on the drum, carefully eyeball the distance from the playing surface to the top of the crown. This is where one may argue having it at least 1/2" from the playing surface, or 1/4", it's your call.

Next, begin trimming the excess skin: be careful here so that you don't committ the same error and don't tighten the tension rods so soon after you've mounted the new skin. I would give it three days if it's sunny and warm where you are at.

I've done this on occassion and I know how frustrating this feels!

You can save the skin!

Is it a traditional crown? With traditional crowns, you want to cut the skin just about the same height as the top of the crown, or just below. You mounted on saturday and you cranked it up today? It could'nt be that warm in UK? PLus UK is damp no?
I usually wait a week(7days), and we usually have about 60-70 humidity. I still won't crank it up, I will only tune it up alittle at a time and progress as the head starts to break in. I mounted a nice cowhide-dark color and smooth texture onto a LPclassic tumba on sunday. It has a comfort curve II crown, and I tell you its a PITA. Luckily I got some 7" long hook bolts and cut the extra protrusion of the hook area so as not to scratch or mare the shell. Traditional crowns are so much easier to tuck the skin under the lug bracket portion. Then we had Santa ana winds (read: dry as 15% humidity) and the skin dried rather quickly. MOnday morning I loosened the lugs so as not to let the playing surface stretch while the skin around the hoop is still wet. Thats where yu need to be careful, the skin around the hoop is still wet. I loosened it furthuer last night too. Its only a 1/4" turn however. I will probably wait until next monday at the earliest to tune it a little.

Someone on this forum suggested after mounting, placing the drum skin down on a plastic bag to slow down the drying out of the playing surface of the skin.

I tried it and worked well, the whole skin dried at about the same rate.

Relax Bro, Like the other great members has said,you can use it on the Quinto or on the Bongó. So get yourself back on you feet & think. If it is a thick skin,the sound of the Hembra will rejoy your spirit. You always need a great skin for the Quinto also.

I will try get a pic posted later today , Im still sure I can fit to my Quinto . For the record the skin slipped under the crown the same day i fitted it which is Comfort rim type meinl marrathon classics. Im my ignorance being the first time fitting skin I thought it would maybe ok . DUH it aint .
So The only option now is go the Quinto route methinks.

I first got to say the skin slipped under the rim as I was trimming I let it dry over 5 days before i tried to turn up the skin , It sounds very ringy coming from the crown .
